Notes for SUZANNE MARIE SMITH:
Suzanne Marie Smith was born at US Naval Hospital, Subic Bay. Philippines on Friday, October 20. 1967. The time was 8:52 AM. This is in the town of Olongopo City in Zambales and province of Pampanga. She was delivered by Dr. Charles M. Scott, a Navy Lt. Cdr. who lived right next door in our Navy duplex. Fr. Riley, Navy chaplain, baptized her on 12-16-1967 in the Main Navy Church; Her proud Godparents were Dr. Bert Baretto and his wife Ching Baretto. They were native Filipinos and after service he practiced orthopedics in MD.
Suzanne was a plump little girl (!) who was adored by the Filipina amahs (maids) and nearly never allowed to walk. Their names were Jenny and Natalie. They lived with us for the two years we were in the P I. Suzanne was privileged to live in Olongopo City, which was a "famous" Navy port. It had about 600 bars and at least 1200 "registered" prostitutes and other non-registered ones that did the same kind of back (!) breaking work. It was an "open" city for all the sailors of the world. We lived in town because there was no house yet available on the base. We had a 24-hour guard to be sure all went well. It was exciting with this newborn child and cockroaches the size of rats, plus rats to boot. It was HOT and only our bedroom was air-conditioned so of course we kept the baby in this room with us. Nothing bad really happened and in 9 months we were moved on to the base which was truly a tropical paradise with all the amenities of the US plus beautiful white sandy beaches, huge palm trees, ocean breezes and beautiful flowering things.
Suzanne attended St. Louis grade school in Englewood, CO and graduated in 1981. She was very active in the Westernaires horse-riding group and couldn't wait for those early Saturday morning rides to the stables with her mother. Suz also played the piano by ear and gave a wonderful recital where her father could hardly believe his eyes or ears. She was an aspiring ballerina and took ballet lessons. She was very good but had to stop because of exercise-induced asthma. She was a Bluebird. Suz worked at Piccolo Pizza from the age of 14. Bishop George Evans who was an extremely popular bishop confirmed her in the spring of 1981. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson HS on May 29, 1985 with the graduation being held at the Denver coliseum. A full contingent of family attended and was very happy and proud.
She graduated from Colorado State Univ. on May 13, 1989. This was a cold and dreary day for such a stupendous occasion. Suzanne was also an avid skier and was quite good, of course, because she had a good teacher / boy friend, Steve Nuttall.
Suzanne befriended the Hank Kashiwas' by taking care of their son, Henny. She was able to take a Caribbean cruise with the Kashiwas and many other skiing celebrities. She was Henny's baby sitter, tough job, but some body had to do it. Hank won a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics in down hill skiing, which were held in Canada and is still an announcer for the winter Olympics.
On a beautiful sunny day, July 18. 1992, she was married to Steven Nuttall at Our Lady of Lourdes church near Porter Hospital, Denver CO. The reception was held at the Phipps Mansion and fun was had by all. The music for this affair was very nice and her father danced till his shoes smoked. Fr. John B. Barone, a native Denverite and new pastor of this church married her. He had a very nice way with the young people. He died suddenly on Jan. 20,1994. They got to drive my 1927 Mercedes replica car & sip the bubbly. Unfortunately this marriage ended in divorce in 12-2001.
On a beautiful, sunny Saturday, June 6, 1992, she graduated from the University of Denver with a Masters degree in Education. The graduation was held at the Margery Reed Quadrangle. DU provided a little celebration after with champagne etc. This was really very nice. She was the first "Smith girl" to get an advanced degree. The speaker at this graduation was Ted Turner who was accompanied by his wife, (Hanoi) Jane Fonda. Her class gave a bell to hang in Buchtel tower on DU campus. She had worked at DU in the special ed dept. She wrote her resume:

She began teaching in Adams County at Mapleton School shortly thereafter and enjoys her work very much. She is the best teacher there and this was noted on Oct. 18, 1994 when she got a certificate of appreciation from the Adams county school board! In 1995 the Nuttall's got to visit Santiago, Chile and visit Steve's parents. Had a great trip and told us all kind of things about the country.
She and Steve bought their first house at 8563 West Pacific Pl. in Lakewood CO around mid-May, 1997. Having great fun redoing some of the house and Steve's parents, from England, were houseguest over Xmas '97. Steve's parents had been transferred to Chile again in April 1998 and things turned bad after he was severely injured and a year later died. Suz & Steve divorced in Sept. 2001; there were no children. She got a part time job at Garramone's and has had new experiences.
On October 19, 2001, at 4:00 pm, at Doug's sister's house a small, family wedding was held. Suz & Doug became man & wife. The Methodist minister is a family friend. A reception was held afterward and every body is happy for the new couple.
On May 7, 2003 Madeline was born via C-Section at Lutheran Hsp. Suz required 2 units of blood & some surgery. The baby is beautiful & she attended her 1st concert on 7-4-03 in Vail with her g-parents.
Suz is the middle child but failed to be a problem that this connotes. She is a stupendous teacher of challenged students & is loved by her peers and students. She is a mother & wife that many father's & even husbands only dream about...lucky Doug got her! I love her dearly & hope she has a long, prosperous & happy life with many wonderful g'children.

Madeline was born at 9:43 AM at Lutheran Hsp., weighing 8#, 7 oz via C-Section on 5-7-2003. She is a beautiful newborn with wonderful bright, open eyes. The family is overjoyed about the newest baby. She was named after her Aunt Madeline in Pittsburgh, PA. & Sr. Madeline Frank, who was a Divine Providence nun for many years & actually founded a school in Boston, Mass. I think she looks like daddy as she is getting older! Little Miss Maddie attended her first concert in Vail, CO on 7-4-03. The orchestra was the Rochester Philharmonic Orch. She went with her parents & G-parents Smith. She was a big girl, awake most the time, eyes wide & alert and their was minimal crying. Incidentally she was the hit of the occassion with everybody in the audience admiring her!
Maddie was baptized on 10-5-2003 by Deacon Alan Spears at St. Jude R.C. Church, Lakewood, CO with Godparents Kyle & Anne Durlam. The whole Denver family was in attendance. 29. ANNE KATHLEEN6 SMITH (DALE JOSEPH5, JOHN AUGUSTIS4, JOHN SULLIVAN3, WARREN S.2, WILLIAM (W.)1)106 was born 29 Sep 1968 in USNH, Subic Bay, Pampanga Prov., Philippine Islands. She married (1) ALAN CRAIG MASON, JR. 23 Jan 1993 in St. Elizabeth Ch.,Denver, Denver Co., CO, son of ALAN MASON and MARY BENEDICT. He was born 28 Apr 1966 in Clearwater, FL. She married (2) KYLE WILLIAM DURLAM107 24 Oct 1997 in Las Vegas NV, son of JERRY DURLAM and ANNETTE SIGLIN. He was born 24 Nov 1965 in Jefferson, Greene Co., Iowa.
Notes for ANNE KATHLEEN SMITH:
After a stupendous 1968 New Years Eve party was held at the Officers club there appeared nine months later a third daughter! Anne Kathleen Smith was born in the US Naval Hospital at Subic Bay, Philippines on Sunday, September 29, 1968, at 11:02 PM, a beautiful, balmy tropical night. This is in the town of Olongopo City, in Zambles, the province of Pampanga. Mom had a very long labor. While Anne and Suzanne were not born on the same day their birthdays have always occurred on the same day of the week ( a mystery!!). Dr. Charles M. Scott, a career Navy doctor, delivered her. He lived right next to us in duplex Navy housing. Subic Bay was the largest Navy base in the world and we were heavily involved in Viet Nam. The Navy hospital was 20 miles inside the base and deep in the jungle. There were monkeys and every thing. One of the fascinating things were these huge fruit bats with wing spans of 3-4 feet. The jungle went wild that night and everybody knew that "GREATNESS" was coming into the world.
Anne was baptized on October 26, 1968 at the Main Base Church which was very old church started by Spanish friars when they owned the Philippines. It was not air conditioned! Her proud God-parent were Miss Emily Kersten, a career Navy nurse from Wisconsin, who was a commander. Her Godfather was Abe Nomura, a native Japanese-Hawaiian who became an ophthalmologist. The priest was an Augustinian monk, in the Navy Chaplain Corp, Father Visocky...young, studious, blond, quiet type...
On March 30. 1975 Anne received her First Holy Communion at Christ the King parish near the CU Medical center. Her Grandparents Smith were in attendance along with Aunt Madeline Vincunas. (Sadly Grandpa Smith died on 4-15-1975.) On March 14, 1982 auxiliary Bishop George Evans confirmed Anne at St. Louis Church. Her sponsor was a co-worker at South Denver Anesthesiology, Chris Similanic. SDA was Anne's first job at age 14 and she did a great job pulling staples and doing general office work till she graduated from HS...rich.
Anne attended St. Louis grade school (remember Mr. Sadono) and graduated in June 1982. She was very active in the Westernaires. In 1980 she won Third Place in the tenderfoot class horse show. Her father couldn't believe his eyes when his little daughter was on the boards playing basketball for St. Louis. She was a cheerleader extraordinaire. She then went unflinchingly to Thomas Jefferson HS and graduated in June 1986. During this time Anne got into the punk movement and loved to dress in black and do strange things with her hair and got a tattoo. I would have loved to see some of those hairdos. Amidst this, her artistic ability sprung forth and she had a painting exhibited on the DU campus and she won the Gold Key award!!! which meant it went back East and was exhibited there. Eastman Kodak was the sponsor. It now is framed and shown under guard at there home on Elm St.
She started her college career at the University of Colorado but soon found out there were too many distractions and transferred to the Colorado State University so she could pursue her "life work." She graduated with a Bachelor of Science, MAGNA CUM LAUDE in December, 1992. Her major was Human Nutrition and Dietetics. The whole family was very proud of her stellar achievement done in her unflappable way. This did not remain her chosen path but she went on to excell in the medical insurance business &.
Some rain did fall in Anne's life when one of her best friends, Maria Placke, died in an auto accident on January 19, 1991. She was attending law school at DU at the time. I attended HS with her uncle in Dayton, Oh where Maria was born. Small world,,. One of Anne's good memories was staying at a convent in Pittsburgh and also the bachelor officer quarters at Treasure Island, CA with hundreds of sailors as a young girl.
Anne was very lucky to meet a nanny in Genesee who was a French girl. She went to see her in Avignon, France and saw the sights. She then took the train to Florence, Italy and arrived at 4 a.m.and was flashed by an old man! Her parents arrived and rescued her. She then was shown the sights of Florence & Rome. She met nice Italian boys along with seeing Pope John Paul II saying the Angelus.
She married Alan Craig Mason Jr. on January 23, 1993 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church on the Auraria campus. The reception was held at a large " home" on York St. (Parkside Suites) near the Denver City Park. An appropriately looking Franciscan friar, Fr. Gene Emrisek, married them. Honeymooned in Mexico. Moved to their house in Virginia Village on 1150 S. Elm St. How many guys have a Star trek space station ice carving on their wedding table? Unfortunately this marriage was not made in heaven and ended on 3-7-1997 with a divorce and later an annulment.
On June 3, 1994, Anne finished her dietetic internship at Penrose/St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Co. with a big dinner at the Hsp. She had some articles published during her internship!! The Mason's acquired Amelia, an Afghan wolfhound, as a companion for declawed Althea, the personable, black feline! On Nov 30, 1994 Anne got her coveted R.D. and the whole family was very proud of her. She is working at Mercy Hospital for her first job. On 1-30-1995 she started work for Dale Smith, MD. She worked for me about a 1 1/2 year then went to work for Great West Life Insurance Co. She was surprised when they told her she got a 20% raise in 2/1997. It pays to be "greatness."
In Jan, 1997 she took a trip to Dublin, Ireland; London and other parts of England with her friend Sherri and her cousin, Darren Kurpecky, who was working in Manchester, England for Oracle at the time. On October 24, 1997 she went to Las Vegas NV and married Kyle William Durlam. They later had a wonderful family gathering at Ardell which is near downtown Denver. They reside on Elm St. in an older brick house that is in the Mayfair area of east Denver. She was informed in late 1998 that her marriage to Craig was annulled. Kyle and Anne visited England in 10-1998 and were immediately Anglophiles!
On 4-24-1999 we all traveled to Jefferson, Iowa where they had a nuptial mass at St. Joseph church. Kyle's elderly grandparents and the rest of us witnessed this. This is where Kyle spent his youth till age 16. A very nice, clean city which was a great place to grow up His g-parents were very proud of their town & gave us a 1st class tour. A reception was held at Uncle Phil's house & was fun!! Everybody is so proud of Kyle. Those Iowan love their football teams & it reminds me of another place I know about inhabited by worthless nuts!
Anne went into labor & after 12 hours it was decided to do a C-section. Bryn Rose Durlam was born on 5-15-2000 at Littleton Hsp. Every body was relieved when this baby was born!! She is absolutely as beautiful as her name. Anne is a wonderful mother & wife. She is a super cook & has mastered making the Easter egg "cheese" so the old Hungarian tradition will live! She enjoys going to CU football games & Colorado Rockies game with her husband & has taken up golf.
She is "my baby" of whom I am well proud & love dearly despite a disagreement or two in our life (Ha Ha). She & I were like a spark to tinder. She is a mother & wife equal to her own mother whom I consider the best ever & she is a learned woman. The first two are certainly the ultimate thing any woman can aspire to do & beats all other things conceivable in this mixed up world...Annie did it!
The beat goes on. . .

Notes for ALAN CRAIG MASON, JR.:
Alan Craig Mason Jr. was born on April 28, 1966 in Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, Florida. The name "Craig" was chosen to call this small, blond haired, blue eyed wonder, as his father was called Alan.
Craig grew up in several military bases in Florida; including MacDill AFB (Tampa), Eglin AFB (Pentacle), and Homestead AFB in the Everglades. Craig enjoyed walking the beaches of Clearwater and collecting sharks teeth. Craig's sister, Diana, was born in Homestead AFB on January 28, 1969. Shortly thereafter, dad was assigned to Spangdalem AFB near Frankfurt, Germany.
Germany was quite an experience for the Mason family. The first day the Mason's arrived, the townsfolk paraded the family around the entire village of Bilegin, a small German village just outside the AFB where the family lived all 4 years. Craig was placed on a large horse in front of the procession as the new American family joined the community. Craig's sister Diana actually learned to speak German before she spoke English. Craig's favorite "show and tell" in Kindergarten was when he proudly brought in a pig's ear for the class to see - Craig had helped the townsfolk slaughter a pig!
After Germany, the Mason's move back to Largo, Florida. Craig's dad was reassigned to Iceland and spent several years away from the family. Craig spent his days playing in rivers and streams, shooting water moccasins with his BB gun, and hanging out with "bad kids." Mom decided to return to vocational school and became an Accounts Receivable clerk to support Craig and Diana.
Craig's father Alan was then reassigned to Lowry AFB in Denver, CO. The family moved out with a stray cat called Cinnamon that Craig had found in his Grandfather's trailer park right before the family moved. Cinnamon turned out to be a great companion and a fearless fighter of a tom-cat. He would proudly bring home his fresh kills for Craig to inspect.
While on Lowry, Craig attended Baker Jr. High School. It was here that Craig made friends easily and became "popular." Although Craig's parents divorced at this time, Craig finally felt at home in the city of Denver.
In 1982, the divorce forced Diana, Mary, and Craig to move to New Jersey and to live with Craig's grandfather Odell Benedict in Browns Mills, NJ. Craig spent 3 years in high school and was a shy, reclusive "geek" that did not participate in sports or talk to girls. Craig missed Denver so much that he applied to, and was accepted, at the University of Denver.
Attending DU from 1984 to 1988 was the best thing that ever happened to Craig. Craig was studying Computer Science and also founded a Fraternity at DU call Zeta Beta Tau. He became involved in sports, girls (what a change!), and socializing. He met Greg Hoggatt at college, and the two became fast friends.
After college,Craig briefly lived at his father's house in Shrewsbury, PA for a year and worked in the defense industry. He longed for his life in Colorado. One day, Greg Hoggatt called up with the possibility of a job opening for Craig at Great-West Life, an insurance company in Englewood, CO. Craig jumped at the chance, and was hired a few days later! So, not only does Craig owe Greg his job, but a roommate to live with, Paul Schwappach. That's ok - Greg owes Craig his life when Craig drove Greg to the hospital while he was having an appendicitis attack. Craig managed to hit every bump in the road on the way!
Craig graduated from the University of Colorado and was awarded a Master's in Business Administration on Dec. 8, 1995 at Auraria campus. He enjoys scuba diving, biking, and sports. Amazing how people change!

"Greetings, we are just completely nuts about our new baby girl. Bryn Rose Durlam was born at 1:07 AM on Monday May 15, 2000. She was 7 pounds, 1 ounce and 20 1/4 inches long. She is absolutely beautiful (what else would you expect us to say?)... See for yourself." This was the note E-mailed to the world by daddy Durlam. Bryn was born at Swedish Hsp. in Englewood, Arapahoe Co., CO. Dr. Scott Graham, via C-section, delivered her. The whole family was tickled pink and the grandparents were ecstatic. She has the widest eyes I have ever seen and is taking every thing in. At 3 months she is beautiful, wide-eyed and wants to be held by MOMMY. She was baptized on Oct. 8, 2000 at Christ the King Catholic church. Rev. Darryl Schaffer was the friendliest prelate I ever met at a baptism. It was a bright, Colorado day and a party was held at the parent's house.
Got her first tooth on 10-11-00. She has not slept thru the night two days in a row, until the car crib technique, then that failed & poor Mom is up again with happy Brynnie. Little Bryn is here with the grandparents this fine day in Oct. 2001. She knows her name and says it! She has watched "Hi oh" a million times (the song the dwarfs sing in Snow White.) She has a remarkable vocabulary at the tender age of 2 and loves to talk. She is very smart and likes to sing. Does have asthma and eczema which cause her problems but she is a strong little trooper and is doing well. She has naturally wavy blond hair and has beautiful blue eyes and is a natural beauty with a radiant personality at 2 years of age! At 3 she & G-pa got up one morning & made coffee & talked while G-ma slept till 10:00 AM.
