7. JOHN SULLIVAN3 SMITH (WARREN S.2, WILLIAM (W.)1)31 was born 02 Feb 1885 in Hemlock, Salt Lick Twp., Perry Co., OH, and died 14 Dec 1959 in Miami Valley Hsp, Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH32. He met (1) MARIE ??. She died in prob. Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH. He married (2) SARAH ANNA DAWSON33 Abt. 02 May 1905 in New Lexington, Perry Co., OH34, daughter of STEPHEN DAWSON and MARGARET PLANT. She was born 01 May 1888 in Rendville, Perry Co., OH, and died 20 Aug 1912 in Good Sam. Hsp, Zanesville, Muskingum Co., OH35. He married (3) LULA A. WRIGHT36 Unknown. She was born 1885 in Ohio, and died Abt. 1953 in Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH.
Notes for JOHN SULLIVAN SMITH:
John S. Smith was my grandfather. He was born on Groundhog Day in 1885 (Feb. 2.) He is mentioned in the 1900 US census with his sister and 3 brothers & a picture exists with the 4 brothers taken in Pittsburgh PA. (Possibly to visit his g-grand mother's relatives or just a fling in the big city...it is addressed to their sister, Anna or Amanda.) My mother whose memory was not he best told me his middle name was Sullivan...I wonder if it was Shannon??
In the 1910 US Census he was 25 & married 5 years. His father & mother were both native Ohioans. He gave his occupation as a blacksmith, coal miner & electrician. He could read & write. His wife, Sarah Ann Dawson was born in 1887and gave her age as 23 in 1910. There were 2 children in 1910: Delmar F. was 3 4/12 amd Edna M. was 2 years old.
In the 1920 US Census he lists his wife, Lula A. (? Wright) and lists his children as John A., Delmar F., Edna M., Helen M. & Carl E. Smith. He is living in the village of Hemlock, Salt Lick Twp. Perry Co., OH.
Surprisingly he is not mentioned in his father's obit which is in the "New Lexington Daily News" dated Wed. 3-25-1936 (?oversight, family tiff, poor editing...no one will ever know.) sent to me by Richard Dew. He is definitely a son of Warren Smith as noted on birth records.
He worked for General Motors in Moraine City, OH & was an electrician when I knew him. He was a natty dresser & liked to wear suits & ties. He enjoyed "holding court" at Ed's Cafe on Valley St. in North Dayton which is now gone. He was a very gregarious, talkative, friendly man. He liked to carry cash & a pistol he kept in his car. He married a lady named Marie ?? who was very quiet and reserved. A good companion for my g-father. They lived in a rented house on Brown St. near Miami Valley Hsp. (now torn down.) I thought he looked like his mother. Mary Jane, with white hair, red face, twinkles in his eye & a big smile. He was about 5 foot 7 inches tall, weighed 160 pounds, had a gut but wasn't fat and wore silver frame glasses. He carried himself with pride and loved life. He was successful coming from the background he did. He was an outdoorsman & loved to go hunting and fishing. He & I did go fox hunting on occasion & I did enjoy this. He is in movies we have taking deer off the car x 2 after a deer-hunting trip in Ohio with my father, John A. Smith. He loved to smoke a pipe and listen to the radio. He also was an avid reader.
He did one thing that still lives in my memory. He took me to the Ringling Bros, Barnum and Bailey circus in Dayton. We arose very early, saw the circus train come into town, unload the animals & the parade of elephants to the fairgrounds. The roustabouts & the elephants put up the big top and other tents. Then we went to the only performance and enjoyed the circus acts and Gargantua the huge gorilla in captive in an air-conditioned cage. What an adventure for a kid of 12 in about 1952! The circus was then disassembled and moved on in the night probably to the big city of Cincinnati for the next day to begin again.
He died at the age of 74 years, 10 months, 12 days in 1959 at Miami Valley Hsp in Dayton, OH of cirrhosis of the liver. He was buried in Willow View cemetery by Morris Sons Funeral home, Third St., Dayton OH. Willow View is off of I-75, 2 blocks; turn left at 2500 Neff Rd. Dayton, OH. 45414. The grave is in Section K. Lot 38, Space 8. It is a flat monument with only his name and dates on it at the foot of Maynard's grave who is his brother. No spouse's grave site exists aside him. Willow View Cemetery, Montgomery Co., 394808N 0841055W
A vase exists which is chipped at the base and is etched with his name and my g-mother, Sarah A. Dawson, dated 1903.
A tombstone picture & death certificate is available.

Notes for SARAH ANNA DAWSON:
Very little historical data is known about this lady. A picture exists of 4 young men addressed as "Sarah Smith, & says Dear sister, etc. This picture is listed as Smith boys but I wonder if these were not her brothers?
She died of peritonitis following surgery for removal of ovary and appendix at Good Samaritan Hsp, Zanesville, OH according to death certificate 45512, district # 951, Zanesville, Muskingum County, OH. She was 24 years, 3 months, 19 days old.
Her burial site is unknown although the death cert. states she is buried in Corning, OH. and the cemetery closest to Corning is Oakwood Cemetery. Many Dawson's are buried in Oakfield Cemetery.
Sarah Dawson Smith was my g-mother who brought a Brown Weller jardiniere into the family which still exists. She obviously was not known by the family although the Dawson were very close to my father, John A. Smith, her son.

Notes for AMANDA "ANNA" SMITH:
I remember her being called "Anna" a trait that seems to be followed a lot; naming you one thing and calling you another...what a scourge for genealogist.
She was living in Zanesville OH at the time of her father's death in 1936 and was married to Gus Uhler. Her name is in Warren Smith's obituary in the New Lexington, OH paper on the front page.
Amanda Smith had severe depression after her son's death and lived only 4 to 5 years after his death, per family lore. A picture existed of him in his US Navy uniform lying in a coffin existed & was owned by John A. Smith. Taking pictures of the dead was quite the thing years ago.

10. MAYNARD MARK3 SMITH (WARREN S.2, WILLIAM (W.)1)46 was born 28 Jan 1898 in Congo, Monroe Twp., Perry Co., OH, and died 26 May 1958 in St. Eliz. Hsp., Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH47. He married (1) MINNIE FLORENCE ENGLE48 12 Jan 1918 in Hemlock, Perry Co., OH, daughter of ALBERT ENGLE and LILLIE BABB. She was born 24 Mar 1902 in Hemlock, Perry Co., OH, and died 27 Nov 1995 in Barberton, Summit Co., OH48. He married (2) MARY ELLEN ??49 Jun 1951 in Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH. She was born 1907 in Unk, and died 21 Jul 1965 in poss. Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH.
Notes for MAYNARD MARK SMITH:
Perry Co. Birth Index & his birth certificate substantiates his parents and birthday. He was born in Monroe Twsp., village of Congo. His real name is Mark Maynard but he later was called Maynard Mark Smith. He was my uncle who was a very pleasant, delightful man who was loved by everybody. He lived about 1 mile from our house on Waneta Ave. at 2630 Guernsey Dell Ave. A house that he built over a very long time. Ed, his brother, lived with them for some time. He and his first wife, Minnie Engel, are duly noted in the 1920 US census when he was 21 & Minnie was 18. They had no children. He was living in the village of Hemlock, Salt Lick Twp, Perry Co., OH. He later had 3 children & this marriage ended in divorce. He took care of his mother, Mary Jane Roberts Smith in her latter yars after she left her home in Hemlock, OH. She died in his house in June 1950.
When I knew him he lived with a lady named Mary E. (don't know her maiden name) and they were common law; but at the urging of his mother they were married in June 1951.
Maynard had lots of physical complaints & I remember he developed Bell's palsy (paralysis of one side of the face} & had difficulty swallowing and talking. He came to the house and received lots of sympathy as he always would.
He worked at General Motors, Moraine City, OH. for many years as a spot-welder. My father, John A. Smith also worked there . His "trademark" was a high-pitched squeaky voice. He was about 5 foot, 7 inches tall & 165 pounds. He was kind, considerate & a very easy going guy. He would give you the shirt off his back!
He rarely drank alcohal when I knew him, but he died of bleeding esophageal varices, from cirrhosis of the liver at St. Elizabeth Hsp. West Dayton, Oh (now closed.) I was working at this hospital at the time of his final hospitalization. He was 60 years, 3 months, 28 days old when he died. He is buried in Willow View cemetery aside his wife, Mary Ellen. Willow View is on Neff Rd. outside Dayton OH off of I-75. My father marked his grave with a brass plaque that he made for "Uncle Mayn." Later his children placed a marker over his grave. He was buried from Morris Sons Funeral home,1809 E. Third St., Dayton OH. He is buried right above the site of his father, in Section K, Lot 38, Space 2. The GPS for the cemetery is 394808N 0841055W. He will be missed by the John A. Smith family & his many friends.

Notes for DELMAR F. SMITH:
In the Ohio Historical Ctr. Archives the list of John S. & Sarah Smith's children are the eldest being Dalbert (!) so I think this must be the man we knew as Delmar! Then there was Amanda whom we always called Anna, Mark Maynard whom we always called Maynard and finally Edgar who was Ed!
Delmar was a pilot on the Ohio River. He lived in Cincinnati, OH in the 1950's & probably the 1960's. We visited him only rarely since he lived "so far away" in the days before interstate highways; now Dayton is nearly a suburb of Cincinnati! He travelled around the USA in his early days & spent some time with George Dawson in Hillsboro, Illinois, then moved on to Peoria, IL. Margaret Jane Dawson was relating to me that "he knew & had something to do with the Amelia Earhart's flight."
In the social security death index found this: b: 5 Feb 1906, d: 4-1986. Social Security # 296-12-0743. This man spent lots of time in FL. This could be him??? Needs research since I knew very little about Delmar since my father (JAS) and he were estranged.

13. EDNA MAE4 SMITH (JOHN SULLIVAN3, WARREN S.2, WILLIAM (W.)1)53 was born 07 Jan 1908 in Rendville, Perry Co., OH, and died 01 Aug 1943 in Charrington Hsp., Logan, Hocking Co., OH54. She married GARRETT C. REICH55 Abt. 1925 in ? Drakes, Perry Co., OH, son of WILLIAM REICH and JOSEPHINE KUNCE. He was born 09 Jul 1904 in Drakes, Perry Co., OH, and died 22 Nov 1943 in Drakes, Monroe Twp., Perry Co., OH56.
Notes for EDNA MAE SMITH:
Prior to mid 1950's and the interstate system roads were curving, narrow, and dangerous. So the ride from Dayton OH to Drakes OH was an exciting adventure. In the early 1940's when we would go to aunt Edna's house on Friday night for the week end. My dad (JAS) loved to go back down to the "hills" where he was born and see his sister. When we got near the house, I'll swear, you could smell fresh bread wafting from her house which would lead the way if you followed your nose. Edna Smith was my aunt who made the bread & everybody loved to eat it right out of the oven. She was born in Rendville, OH. I remember her as a very loving, kind and fun. She was a real homemaker & an excellent seamstress who made clothes for herself and her family. Her brother, John A. Smith and she were very close.
After marrying Garrett Reich, a local boy, she lived at Drakes, OH. which is a very small village near Corning OH. She lived in a little white, frame house aside of the Methodist church from which they were buried. The house directions are: go to Corning OH via State route 13 and turn right at west 155, there is a white church in Drakes OH and her house is the one on the right of the church facing the church from the road. She had one son, Robert Reich, that was the pride of her life. Pictures exist of them holding their little dog. She was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star.
She became prematurely ill and was hospitalized at Good Samaritan Hsp in Zanesville OH; she then must have been transffered to Charrington (Hsp?) in Logan, Hocking Co., Oh where she died of renal failure & myocarditis (inflammation of the heart.) The cause of the renal failure is given as nephritis which was common in those days from streptococcus disease but other causes could certainly have existed. She was only 35 years, 6 months, 25 days old. Date is from death certificate #50914, Reg Dist # 600. She had a large funeral in the church right aside of her house and it was very sad. She was buried at New Lexington, OH Cemetery, per death certificate, aside of her husband. There is a very large, square marker in the cemetery with the last 3 names of Dunlapp, Reich and Kunce. This is in ward 39A. This cemetery is found from Corning, OH by going east on Ohio 155/Main St., turn left on Ohio 13, turn left on Marietta Rd., turn right on Ohio 93, turn left on Dutch Ridge Rd., turn right on Cemetery Rd. or County Road 83. There are good signs pointing to New Lexington Cem., 39 42 24 N / 82 12 53 W, Pike Township.
Her son, Bob, was cared for by the Reich family until he came to Dayton, OH. He lived with John A. Smith's family and worked at Nat'l Cash Register. He then joined the US Air Force. He was last seen in 1955 while visiting Dayton OH. Died in 1989.
There is a brown Weller Victorian jardinere made in Zanesville, OH which dates to circa 1900. It was originally owned by the Dawson family and in particular, Sarah Dawson Smith. It was given to Edna Smith, then John A., then Dale J. then Karen A. & eventually to Katrina Hoggatt. Then hopefully to the oldest offspring of the first born.

Notes for GARRETT C. REICH:
Garrett C. Reich was my uncle and he lived in Drakes, OH. He is remembered as a very lively man who had a nice home and automobile. He was a religious man & slightly better off because of his railroad job as a brakeman for the New York Central railroad. He had a prime job because working for the railroad was like working for the airlines today. He even had a telephone in 1938 when that was a rarity. He was very successful by the standards of the 1940's & he was very proud of his occupation. He was slightly overweight & had thinning hair. He liked to eat out which was different in those days. They had a terrier dog that they just loved. He collected old auto plates & nailed them in his garage. He was a very active Mason. My next trip down he was taking me (DJS) on a train ride and I couldn't wait but he was accidentally killed before this happened. I remember him saying this like yesterday even though it has been 60 years. He was not a veteran per his death cert. # 70957, Reg Dist 1016. Information was given by Everett Dunlap.I do not know the relationship of the Dunlap's except they were good friends.
He was madly in love with his wife and very devoted to her (she died in August, 1943 rather suddenly and he was still in grief.) He died in a railroad accident in November,1943 at the age of 39 years, 4 months, 13 days. He was crushed between 2 railroad cars. His watch that he carried in his breast pocket was imbedded in his abdominal wall and stopped at the moment of the crash! Obviously the lore of the family had many reasons why this accident happened.
Another funeral in the same church where his wife had just been buried was more than a 14-year-old son and the members of the family hould be made to bear. An open coffin in the church with crying, and sobbing was more than a human being should be made to tolerate. I (djs} will never forget this as long as I live.
He was buried on 11-25-1943 at New Lexington (Millertown), OH Cemetery in ward 39A aside his wife & parents. The Dunlaps are buried there also but I do not know the relationship of the Dunlap's. A very large square tombstone with the 3 last names of Dunlap, Reich & Kunce mark the grave. 39 42 24 N / 82 12 53 W, Pike Township.
Pictures exist of this family.

Notes for ROBERT JOHN REICH:
Bob probably graduated from Corning High School. With the death of his parents he lived with "Josie" Reich, his paternal grandmother, who lived on the other side of the church. The house is in Drakes, Ohio. It is a small, white frame house next door to a church which is still standing in the year 2004.
His son never did fully ever get over his loss of 2 parents in several months. He bought a big Lincoln at a young age and it was soon wrecked. Garrett's mother, "Josie", took care of him until after he graduated from high school. After working in Dayton OH at Nat'l Cash Register he found this not fulfilling & he joined the USAF. He was living with his Uncle John A. Smith. He left OH and was not seen till 1955 in Dayton OH. Never to be seen again by Ohio Smiths but supposedly lived near Gloster, OH.
He died on 4-2-1989 per Social Security Death Index. I sent for his death cert & unfortunately the names of both his parents are not given. The spelling of the last name is Rich (as it was pronounced) & not Reich; so there is question of the authenticity of this data although I feel it is probably him. He was a salesman for home improvement construction. He died at home suddenly at 11:30 PM & was a coroner's case with the cause of death being a heart attack & diabetes mellitus. He was 62 years, 7 months, 8 days. His cremains are at Toledo Memorial Parl, Sylvania, OH 43560.
