10FIRE SAFETY CHARACTERISTICS

10.1Destination of the object

The object will be a Metro station. The station is an interchange junction - connections with A14 Świętokrzyska Station of the Metro line I have been organized on two levels in the western head of the station. On the passenger platforms level a connector enabling communication between the platforms of both lines without the necessity of leaving ticket zones or cross check-in hall has been provided.

In respect to space and functionality three zones can be separated on the metro stations:

  • a public zone – underground passages available all the time,

  • a passenger zone – available for passengers during the metro working hours with a possibility of passing to A14 "Świętokrzyska” station of the metro’s I line,

  • a technical zone – with technical rooms available all the time for the metro’s staff.

10.2People danger category. Forecasted number of person at each storey and in particular room

All so called public zones including platforms, retail and service rooms and lavatories for passengers are classified as people danger category ZL I. The remaining rooms (technical rooms) are classified as people danger category PM.

The station is designed under assumption that 4.680 persons can be present in the station at the same time. To estimate that number the most inconvenient variant was assumed - 600 persons are waiting at a platform and further 4,080 may occupy two train sets standing at the station at the same time.

10.3Forecasted fire load density

The fire load density in areas containing the station’s technical rooms related to service of metro trains, traffic organization, cleaning etc. does not exceed 2000 MJ/ m2.

10.4Building's fire protection class and fire protection class of construction components and their fire propagation grade

The assumed fire resistance requirements for the station and side tracks are not lower than those for “B” class buildings. All components of the building are designed using fire retardant materials (NRO) with following fire resistance class:

  • main supporting structure of the station and side tracks – R 120,

  • roof supporting structure over exits from the underground object – R 30,

  • ceilings - REI 120,

  • walls of connectors between tunnels – REI 120,

  • casing of water/sewage and electric power shafts - EI 120,

  • fire ventilation ducts and shut dampers in ventilation ducts – EI 120,

  • technical rooms, waste bins, power supply rooms - REI 120,

  • doors and closings in walls and ceilings with fire resistance class REI 120 and EI 120 – EI 60, fitted with self-closing hinges,

  • doors and closings in walls and ceilings with fire resistance class REI 60 and EI 60 – EI 30, fitted with self-closing hinges,

  • internal walls EI 30,

  • „external” walls of free standing retail trading rooms – no requirements regarding fire protection class,

  • retail trading rooms partition walls – EI 60,

  • structure of stationary stairs - R 120,

  • escalators – external cladding EIS 60, the rooms below separated from escalators with ceiling and a wall with fire resistance EI 120 and doors EI 60,

  • lift for rescue teams – separated by walls with fire protection class REI 120 and closed with doors of EI 60 with self-closing hinges; lift walls and doors above ground level are designed without any fire protection class,

  • lift on the ground level in the distance less than 8m form the building – on the -1 level separated by walls with fire protection class REI 120 and closed with doors of EI 60 with self-closing hinges; lift walls and doors above ground level are designed without any fire protection class,

  • culverts in walls and ceiling – with the same fire resistance class as the barrier.

Designations:

R - fire capacity (in minutes), determined by Polish Standard related to establishing fire resistance classes of building components,

E - fire tightness (in minutes), determined as above,

I - fire isolation capacity (in minutes), determined as above.

10.5Reaction on fire

The following fire reaction requirements have been specified for the materials to be used for the station:

1) tunnels and metro stations – class A1,

2) ceiling claddings, suspended ceilings, ventilation ducts, attenuators and filters – class A2-s1, d0,

3) claddings, covers, stair casings, partition walls, screens and barriers – class B-s1, d0,

4) platform floors and stairs – class A1fl,

5) floor coverings and floors – class Cfl -s1,

6) pipelines and heat insulation of water/wastewater systems – class A1L; A2L-s1, d0 (the insulation layer of sandwich components shall have the fire reaction class of at least E).

10.6Validation of explosion danger of rooms and external spaces.

No substances making explosion danger zones are foreseen to be stored and used in the station object.

No gas systems are present in the station areas.

10.7Dividing the object into fire zones

The division of the metro station, determined by allowable zone area, is not justified. When dividing the station C11 Świętokrzyska, two basic fire zones were separated:

  1. Passenger platforms including auxiliary levels (retail trade, services) and communication ways running to the ground level,

  2. Groups of rooms related to servicing metro trains and traffic organization and maintenance.

Regardless of the above-mentioned basic division, the following rooms connected with the functioning of the devices affecting safety in conditions of fire or other danger have been sectioned off: station dispatch offices, power system substations, substation control rooms, interlocking relay rooms SRP, Train Traffic Control Equipment rooms, communication devices rooms, multiverter rooms, electronic devices, remote control devices, escalator machine room.

  • For components of fire protection separation the fire protection class REI 120 was assumed. Culverts in walls and ceilings as well as casings of systems and equipment shall have the same fire protection class as the barrier they are installed in (in regard to fire tightness E and fire isolation capacity I). Components of fire protection separation limiting above mentioned rooms are designed to be made of inflammable materials in following classes of fire resistance:

  1. walls and ceilings – REI 120,

  2. fire ventilation ducts and shut dampers in ventilation ducts – EI 120,

  3. casing of water/sewage, power supply and ventilation shafts – EI 120,

  4. culverts in walls and ceilings – El 120, doors and closings in walls and ceilings with fire resistance – EI 60
