JOUR484 Sociology of Journalism
The basic aim of this course is to concentrate on journalism from sociological perspectives. The major influences on journalism and news are to be discussed. Upon completion of this course, the students will become critically aware of the importance of journalism for society, professional values of journalists, news production processes, and news values. Topics to be discussed are: definitions of news; theoretical approaches towards news; news selection and gate-keeping; professional values of journalists; political factors and news; economic factors and news; news sources; organizational factors; journalism and objectivity; news and ideology; tabloidisation of news.
