JOUR482, Graduation Project

Rationale

The main aim of the course is to have the students produce a-six-page newspaper at the end of the semester. Turkish students produce their newspapers in Turkish whereas the non-Turkish speaking students produce their newspapers in English. Therefore it is practical that both of the languages are used, especially when editing the news stories written by the students, and when explaining them their mistakes.

Further remarks

In the process of improving the curriculum of the department new courses were added to the existing ones. Examining the course outlines, we have noticed that there were some overlaps between the old courses and the new ones, and in order to define precisely the limits of the courses we have decided to re-write the course contents of some of the courses.

7. Change in the Course Credit Descriptions

JOUR381

JOUR382

In practice we have noticed that some of the students would register to JOUR482 before taking some of the mentioned courses and as a result they did not have the necessary foundation for the course. Thus we have decided to put pre-requisites for this course.

2.

P

Further remarks

We have decided to put pre-requisites (JOUR281 and JOUR381) for “Internship” (JOUR489) which is a new course. It will be inappropriate if some of the students would want to do their internships before taking the very basic courses in journalism. It will not be nice for them and it will not be nice for the image of our faculty and university.

9. Addition / Replacement / Deletion of Courses in the curriculum

Fill in this part if a new course is added to the curriculum as either an additional course, as a replacement for an existing course, or if the course will be totally removed from the curriculum. Add extra rows for additional courses or remove blank rows. The new course contents shall be attached in the later sections of this form.

(For additional new courses: leave “old course” column blank. For totally deleted courses: leave “new course” column blank. For courses replaced by a new course: fill in both “new course” and “old course” columns.)

11. Splitting into / Modification of / Merging Streams

Fill in this part if the program is splitted into tracks, or the existing streams are modified or merged. Write NONE into “Courses in old curriculum” if the program is split into two or more streams. Write NONE into “courses in new curriculum” column if two or more streams are merged.

Courses in old curriculum

Courses in new curriculum

1.

2.

3.

4.

Rationale

It used to be one stream and stayed one. Having said that we encourage our students to take suitable elective courses from other departments in order to broaden their sphere of interest and increase their job opportunities in future.

12. Unclassified Changes
Fill in this part if there is a change which can not be classified in any of the changes described in above sections.

Brief description of the change

We have added a non-credit area core course “Internship” to the existing 12 courses.

Rationale

It will not cost any money to the university and yet we believe that it will be beneficial to the students. We have always encouraged our students to do their internships during the summer holidays. Experience has shown us that voluntary internship does not work so we have decided to make it compulsory.
