Sociology plays a key role in modern intellectual debates around culture and society in the social sciences. Sociology charts historical transformations and provides ways of understanding contemporary social developments. The main aim of this course is to provide an overview of sociology both in theory and in practice in order to help students to grasp and better understand the social structures and culture of their own society and the societies of others. This course will also provide students with opportunities to discuss conceptual and theoretical constructs in social theory relevant to the social and cultural aspects of communication and media. Topics to be covered include: communication and society; ideology and media; gender and media; crime and media; media and ethnicity; communication technology and social change; globalization.
