Born: September 21, 1978, San Severo (IT).
Current position:
Researcher (project-based) at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Tettonofisica e Vulcanologia, Rome, Italy.
Qualifications:
Mar. 2009 Ph.D. degree in “Geologia ed evoluzione della litosfera” from the University “G. d’Annunzio” of Chieti.
Experience:
The research carried out by Michele Matteo Cosimo Carafa over the years has focused mainly on the analysis of active deformation in the central Mediterranean and was developed by dynamic models and kinematics models. In addition to geodynamic evolution of the Central Mediterranean, the research of Michele Matteo Cosimo Carafa aims to investigate fundamental quantities such as strain rate and slip rate on faults that play a key role for seismic hazard estimates. In last years, Michele Matteo Cosimo Carafa worked on a dynamic model of deformation scale of Europe and on a dynamic model of the Fennoscandian, collaborating with researchers from the NORSAR. Lately Matteo Michele Carafa Cosimo worked on an innovative technique for interpolating horizontal stress axes.
Since 2010 he is a researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Rome, Italy.
Michele Matteo Cosimo Carafa was involved in several national and international projects:
2005-2007, Project S2, INGV-DPC “Valutazione del potenziale sismogenetico e probabilità dei forti terremoti in Italia”, coordinatori Dr. G. Valensise e Dr. D. Slejko;

Vanja Kastelic
Born: June 25, 1978, Kranj (SLO).
Current position: Researcher (project-based) at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Tettonofisica e Vulcanologia, Rome, Italy.
Qualifications:
June 2008 Ph.D. degree in Geological Sciences from the University of Ljubljana with the thesis: “Seismotectonic study of Ravne fault and 1998 and 2004 Upper Posočje earthquakes.”
Experience: In her research Vanja Kastelic concentrates most on identifying seismogenically active faults and characterizing their parameters particularly for the purposes of seismic hazard calculations. Such work joins geological field work supported with laboratory investigations and data analysis. An important part of the studies is stabilizing a reliable method for fault slip-rates that document the fault's activity during its geological history and in the present time. Such data need to be validated and controlled with other methodologies and appropriate methods how to include them in seismic hazard calculations are needed. This research line offers a more geological/physical based approach to classical seismic hazard calculations and is in a span worldwide.
In the years 2003-2008 she worked as an assistant in the fields of structural geology, tectonics and geomorphology at the Department of Geology, University of Ljubljana. In the years 2008-2010 she worked on a post-doc project in the field of active tectonics at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and since 2010 she holds a research position at the same institute.
Vanja Kastelic has partecipated in several national and international projects:
2012-2015: Italian Ministry of University and Research project "High-resolution analyses for assessing the seismic hazard and risk of the areas affected by the 6 April 2009 earthquake”
