2.3 Functional synonomy of mood forms and modal verbs
Ability, Advice, Necessity Synonyms
Some modal verbs are synonyms. For example, should – ought to are close synonyms. Will – would, shall are synonyms in some polite requests. It is sometimes difficult for languages learners to choose among the modal verbs which are synonyms.
Should and ought.
The modal verbs should and ought are treated together here as there is hardly any difference between them. Very often they are interchangeable.
I ought to have married; Men turmush qurishim kerak, yes, I should have married long ago.Ha, Men avval turmush qurishim kerak edi. (Poutsman)
There is, however, a difference in construction. Whereas should is followed by the infinitive without the particle to, ought is always followed by the fo-infinitive.
When reference is made to the present or future, the Indefinite Infinitive is used.
In wartime, a man should not put with his rifle. (Heytn) It's murder, and we ought to stop it. (London). Urush vaqtida odam qurolini qo`ymasligi kerak. Bu qotillik, biz uni to`htatishimiz kerak.
When reference is made to the past the Perfect Infinitive shows thai the obligation was not carried out.22
Should was originally the past tense of shall, but in the course of its development it has acquired new shades of meaning.
