 Reuse and recycle.

Read the value: 
Reuse and recycle
. Ask students to 
explain the difference between the two words. Prompt 
them as necessary by saying that when you reuse 
something, you don’t change it; recycling involves one or 
more processes (usually industrial) and changes the item 
into something else (e.g., plastic into fleece clothing). 
Students think of ways the story shows the children 
reusing and recycling (
They pick up the trash to recycle it, 
and they reuse the rope to fix the bridge
).

Ask students to find a line in the story with the word 
recycle
or 
reuse

Look, we can reuse this rope.

Ask students to make a list of things people can reuse 
instead of throwing away, e.g., clothes, toys, paper, 
cardboard, plastic bottles. Ask students which things they 
or their family reuse and which they could start reusing.

Read the story again. Correct the sentences and 
then number.

Students read and correct the sentences. They then 
number the sentences in the correct order, referring back 
to the story if necessary.

What can you do to show the value: reuse 
and recycle?

Students think of two more ways they can reuse or 
recycle. They write two sentences, then compare with the 
class. Circulate and help with new language.
