Introduction to the unit •
Ask
What’s Unit 1
about? Elicit the meaning of
camping .
Make sure students realize that
camping is the name of
the activity and not the place where people camp (which
is called a
campsite ). Point to the photograph and ask
Where is this campsite? (
In the mountains / At a high point. )
Why are the people camping there? (
Because it’s beautiful. / To see the view. ) Encourage students to say
what else they can see in the photograph (
tents ,
grass ,
rocks ,
clouds ,
the sunset ) and what the weather is like
(
cloudy ).

Then ask further questions to personalize the topic, e.g.,
Do you go camping? When do you go? Do you like it? Do you watch the sunset? Where’s your favorite campsite? •
Students can then guess where in the world the
photograph is from. If you have a map or globe,
ask the students to find and point to Indonesia.

If time allows, ask students to imagine that they’re one
of the people in the photograph and to write sentences
about what they can see and hear and how they feel.
