ABSTRACT
The process of agricultural modernisation in the world has gained unprecedented trend throughout particularly the second half of last century. However this development displays sign of crisis which have been entangled to and can be treated in three major headlines; financial cost, environmental cost and social cost. Long-term unsustainability of food production has raised questions about agricultural practises. This has created renewed interest in ecological aspects of agricultural practices.
The prospect for agriculture for over this century depends to a great extent our willingness to reassess our relationship with the natural world. In particular, we need to regain respect for diversity and complexity of natural systems and be prepared to listen to and work with the components, the structure and functioning of ecosystems rather than seeking to alter and control them.
Alata Horticultural Research Institute established in 1967 however its history goes far back. As an organisation, Alata has been carrying out training, research and production activities with different names and organisational structures according to changing national-regional stuations under the authorities of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs since 1944.
The Institute established on 4000 dekar land 35 km. to Mersin and adjacent to Erdemli districts of İçel where fertile land is scarce and concentrated in the norrow coastal strip. Almost half of The Institutes area are covered by pine trees and maquis vegetation. 1250 da. agricultural land maintain its cultivated biodiversity Along some 3500m.Mediterranean coastline turtles nest and richly vegetated sand dunes are situated. Central Taurus belt on the north contributes its physical and biologic properties.
Alata provides a good habitat for great diversity of flora and fauna including vulnerable, rare, threatened and endangered species. As the main aim on research activities is to meet technical requirements The Institute likely may not sustain its unintended properties in the near future under the circumstances of mounting pressure on its land.
In this researh it is intended to show that The Institute deserves attention not only from agricultural research perspective but also as a whole system. In this parallel it may have represent a challenge to the promotion of the conservation activities in the region within an understanding of interdisciplinary ecosystem approach
