Environmental pollution and protection

The protection of the environment is our common duty. What can be done about pollution?

Pollution must be controlled by the state. Government environmental protection agencies have been set up in many countries. These agencies set standards for such polluters as automobiles, power plants and steel mills. Numerous conferences have been held by these agencies to discuss questions of ecologically poor regions. Questions have been raised also as to whether the oceans should be used for the dumping of nuclear wastes and for undersea nuclear explosions. A great majority of people join all sorts of "GREEN" movements and ecological parties. The international organization "Greenpeace" is also doing much to preserve the environment. We must learn to carefully use the environment and protect nature, because we must preserve the civilization, and leave for future generations fresh air, pure water, national parks and preserves.

Water pollution is an important problem to solve too. Life is impossible without clean water. Stocks of pure water on the Earth decrease very fast. Water pollution is also dangerous because it ruins not only the water bodies, but also all the vegetation and living creatures around it. Firstly, there is a lot of garbage in rivers, lakes and oceans, like plastic bottles, paper and other things. Ship wrecks add trash to water areas. Secondly, products of oil refinement may cause a disastrous effect to water. In the place of an oil spill there is a thin membrane that doesn’t allow water to breathe and kills birds and other animals. A great number of plants and sewerage systems drain waste directly into the water bodies. According to the rules, all these organizations must build cleaning facilities, and people must utilize their wastes.

Soil pollution is represented by buried nuclear wastes, chemical pollution and agricultural impacts. As a result, the Badlands appear and there is danger for people’s health after contact with such soil or after eating products that were cultivated on the polluted territory. There is also a problem of uncontrolled dumpsites that stretch over several kilometers practically near every city of the world. Scientists have invented a lot of methods to clean polluted soil. Phytoremediation, aeration and dredging are among them.

Noise pollution seems to be not as disastrous as the previous ones, but it really does a lot of harm. Noise is produced by airplanes, cars, trains, building activities. Constant noise may cause disorientation, headaches, loose of hearing. Animals and birds may even die or tend to leave their aerials. People try to reduce noise pollution using special barriers along the roads, prohibition of huge vehicles to enter cities. There are also special hours when noise must be reduced and all the noisy activities must be temporary stopped for people to have a rest.
