University “Mediterranea” of Reggio Calabria Department of Information Engineering Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy (DIIES). The main mission of the MicroOptoElectronics Laboratory (MOEL) is the research and education in the field of Silicon Photonics, microelectronic full-custom integrated circuits (IC) design and, more in general, in the broad area of high performing technologies for ICT systems. The integration on a single CMOS microchip of self-energised and ultra-low power electronic modules, sensors and photonic devices is the target of the research. We exploit amorphous Silicon (a:Si:H) and related alloys as the cheapest technology to allow the rapid deployment of an active photonic layer on top of standard microchips with a back-end approach.
