Sang-Hwan Park (Chairman of Jongno-gu Culture & Tourism Committee)/ Interview

Sang-Hwan Park -Chairman of Jongno-gu Culture & Tourism Committee

We should attract citizens all over the world with our unique scenery…

Let’s make the stories of our old alleys as our ‘Commodity’

Could you point out the problems of Jongno-gu tourism industry and provide alternate solutions?

If you think about problems of Jongno-gu’s tourism industry, you cannot find the solution.

Rather, I’d like to point out a major problem of Korea’s tourism industry. I won’t be able to tell you everything but I will point out this one aspect; it’s very hard to find Korea’s unique traditional scenery throughout Korea.

For example, climb to the top of Namsan (Mt.) and look at the downtown of Seoul. You can only see buildings and apartments except for majestic Bukhansan (Mt.) and Hangang (River).

We didn’t create Korea’s unique landscape. Nowadays, even rural districts are filled with concrete and apartments.

Land development that does not take tourism into consideration can cause big problems. Take the case of Sigon and Hanoi of Vietnam or Bangkok of Thailand. People who visit Thailand are fascinated by their unique scenery.

We have only focused on the development as the top priority and followed the patterns of the US and Japan thus losing our unique indentity. We may have to look at the Jongno-gu tourism industry from this point of view. Then we can find the answer to why we should preserve and maintain Bukchon Hanok (Traditional Korean Village Style) Village and how we should design other developed areas and alleys to make them a commodity of tourism.
Could you suggest effective ways of tourism promotion and marketing?

First of all, I consider developing homepages based on various resources on tourism, publishing a tourist newspaper, providing translators in the streets and developing electronic placards.

Is there any good ways to attract more tourists from other countries?

Obviously, it is basic tourism resources of the country. We can utilize our long history as a tourism resource and then promote it effectively. With the today’s trend of globalization, it will be a good plan to attract foreign tourists by stimulating the promoting activities based on TV dramas, novels, movies, homepages, newspapers, and so on.

Would you tell me about the specific products of Jongno on tourism?

Every alley has its stories based on long history and origins other than Jongmyo (the royal ancestral shine of the Chosun Dynasty) and Changdeok Palace which are well-known in Jongno.

I am thinking about discovering these stories and recreating them as commodity of tourism.

We can make the stories as a musical. It’s time to sell the history and stories as unique brand.

What is your opinion for further developing Jongno’s tourism industry?

Jongno-gu Culture & Tourism Committee was organized to make a model of local and national development by globalize the history ad cultural tourism resources of Jongno. However, there are some practical problems that are in the way of our grand vision. I want to ask the Jongno-gu office and local celebrities to cooperate with each other so that the committee can play its role effectively.

Special Feature of this Month/ Kwangjang Market
Mukjagolmok (Food Alleys) at Kwangjang Market filled with various kinds of food and warm hearted of people
Various kinds of food stashed away at Mukjagolmok (Food Alleys) at Jongno 5-ga Kwangjang Market

Mukjagolmok (Food Alleys) at Jongno 5-ga Kwangjang Market provide abundant food stashed away at every corner that you may look for just like scavenging for treasure. 200 stalls are attached in clusters where you can enjoy plenty of food with diverse menu with low price and feel the warm heart of the market people. There are all kinds of side dishes for drinking such as assorted mixtures of raw fish, peppers pancakes, fish pancakes, mung bean pancakes, ‘soon dae’ (black sausage made of pig’s blood and noodle), pig’s trotters, pig’s heads, fish jelly and so on. You can also have diverse dishes that costs no more than 5,000 won such as Gimbap (rice rolls), Ddeokbokgi (spicy rice cake), soup noodles, boiled rice with barley, boiled rice with assorted mixtures, pumpkin gruel and so on.

You can get to the northern gate 2 of Kwangjang Market by walking from the exit of Jongno 5-ga subway station, Subway Line 1. This is the start of Kwangjang Market. At the entrance, you will see the long-lined stalls in the middle. The bright lights of each stall seem to attract customers and make the food look better.

It’s quite crowded with sitters who are eating, bystanders who are selecting the menu and food stalls vendors who are calling out to attract walking people, filled with lively and active atmosphere.

Enjoy delicious foods at a low price

Mukjagolmok (Food Alleys) starts with stalls selling assorted mixtures of raw fish. They are suitable for the salaried workers from their work. Customers are sitting tightly shoulder-to-shoulder on the narrow boards of the stalls which makes people feel closer and warmer.

Walking along the stalls selling law fish will lead to the most crowed place at the crossway in the middle of Mukjagolmok. This place is for the stalls selling mung bean pancakes that look very tasty on the oily cooking pans. The better way to enjoy thick and nice-smelling mung bean pancakes is to eat them dipping in soy sauce with pickled onion. The price is 4,000 won. You can also decide to buy them after tasting the sample and see mung beans grinding on a grindstone by the side. On the opposite site, there are stalls selling bean-jam pancakes at 1,000 won which are rarely found nowadays, so you can enjoy them without thinking of the cost. Besides, there are several stalls together selling Korean traditional gruel. You can have every kind of tasty and hot gruel such as red-bean gruel and pumpkin gruel. On the side, there are pig’s trotters, thick ‘soon dae’, Gimbap, Ddeokbokgi and pig’s skin put on the boards in front of the stalls. You won’t be able to take your eyes off the food.

Walking along with another way, you will find a stall selling boiled barley with fresh vegetables and various cooked potherbs in a nickel bowl. It is called ‘Bibimbap’, mixing rice with various cooked vegetables in a bowl, and you can make a hearty meal of it at 4,000 won. You will be surprised once more at the low price. Walking along the stalls of mung bean pancakes, you will find several other stalls selling a fresh cod fish soup. In front of them, there are stacked pots with ingredients of the dish to stop people.

At the next narrow alley, you can have a dish of sliced raw fish at 10,000 won. Walking farther to the same direction of the alley and turning to the left alley, you will see a store named ‘Hongik’. When going into the alley of the store, you will find the famous stall of ‘Drug Gimbap’. It is named like that as you will be addicted to the taste of the Gimbap once you have tasted it.

It is very popular food at Kwangjang Market. It is a bit difficult to find but if you ask other marketers, they will kindly provide you with specific location. ‘Drug Gimbap’ is finger-sized rice rolls with only sliced carrot and yellow picked radish inside, and extraordinarily it is served with dipping mustard sauce. You will think of its subtle taste again and again. The price is 2,000 won for one serving.

Other things to see at Kwangjang Market

Kwangjang Market is the first permanent market built in 1905 and the pioneer of modern market. As a market with a long history and tradition, it is the place to buy every items ranging from cradle to the grave. Silks and satins, cloth of Korean traditional costume, ceramic, kitchen utensils, imported miscellaneous goods and daily necessities, Mother-of-pearl Lacquer ware, hemp and ramie cloth, nuts, bride´s gifts to her parents-in-law, curtains, every kind of subsidiary materials for clothes and all other stuffs. Every Nook and Corner of Our Neighborhood
Cheongun Hyoja-dong, Origin of Spiritual Culture of Jongno
One of the few regions that we can see Korean-style houses

Cheongunhyoja-dong, located at the bottom of Bugak Mountain and Inwang Mountain that have kept the spirit of Seoul and soul of the Korean people is the No.1 administrative district that has become a single district by bringing Cheongun-dong and Hyoja-dong together in accordance with the plan for integrating the districts. This region, since the early age, has peculiar topography such as rocks with fantastic shapes, cliff and valley and has been the birthplace of many loyal subjects and dutiful sons and daughters. The origin of this region has sunk into the name of the district and the traces remain throughout the region until now.

Cheongunhyoja-dong occupies 10% of the total area of Jongno-gu and boasts high rate of green land area. Cheongunhyoja-dong is not far from the center of the city of Seoul, and there are big and small houses fence to fence. You can see there deteriorated houses because the development of the region has been limited because the region is near to the Blue House and Inwang Mountain and Bugak Mountain. However, thanks to this, now the region is one of the few regions that you can see Korean-style houses. People who come to Cheongunhyoja-dong are mostly mountaineers who climb Inwang Mountain and Bugak Mountain. It is certain that wherever mountaineers go, there are good resting places and restaurants. Thanks to mountaineers, the resting places and restaurants become famous and in everyone’s mouth.
Road that stretches long and a complete view are charm of Cheongun Park.

There is a little and neat park between Inwang Mountain and Bugak Mountain. This is Cheongun Park. In 2008, Jongno-gu removed Cheongun Citizens’ Apartment and made a park in order to provide a resting place for citizens. In order to visit the park, you don’t need to climb the mountains. Buses no.1020 and no.7022 take you to the entrance of the park. When you get off the bus, first you will see a bronze statue, and that is the statue of the late Superintendent General Gyusik Choi, who died during the war with armed communist guerillas on January 21st in 1968. The awe-inspiring figure of the deceased in the snow and rain make us feel strong impression of valuableness and love of his country.

The walk that stretches long and a complete view are charm of Cheongun Park. In addtion, it is the park’s unique merit that you can feel the beauty of the two mountains because the park is located at the point that Bugak Mountain and Inwang Mountain meet with each other. The Seoul castle that comes down from Inwang Mountain is cut off at Cheongun Park and goes by Changui Gate and is connected to Bugak Mountain. However ten meters of the castle is restored to the original state at the end of the park, and therefore you can enjoy experience of the castle.

In the park there is an oval moulding called ‘a rock from Inwang Mountain’. It seems like that somebody made the moulding with a rock from Inwang Mountain. Various manners of rocks, from small stones to big rocks, are occupying the moulding and the moulding present natural atmosphere as an artificial moulding. People with camera love the moulding. Everybody enjoys taking pictures there. From some time ago, the moulding seems to have changed its role from the landmark of the park to photo zone.

It is also a big fruit of visiting here to command a view of Seoul. The observation platform here has a fine view but it is not well-known to people and therefore it is somewhat inactive and it leaves something to be desired. There is no problem to estimate the ground because Jongno-gu District Office indicates the view and place names very well on the information map. However there is no English guidance so that foreigners may feel inconvenience.

The walk is long and flat. The walk is well developed as a park located in high ground so that people who visit here for the first time may be surprised. The walk is the best for lovers to visit and date with each other. In addition there is an arbor named ‘the diversion of great ambition’ and it will be great to sit on the arbor and review the past dreams looking at the diversion making a quick rise in summer.

It is a village of loyalty and filial piety with comparatively well-furnished spiritual and cultural sightseeing infrastructure

Cheongunhyoja-dong has diverse tourist attractions such as bronze statues, milestones and memorials. Among them Woodang Memorial is the best. Woodang Memorial located at 6-22 Shinkyo-dong is a memorial facility designated by the Patriots and Veterans Administration Agency that worships Mr. Hoi Young Lee who went to China as an exile and fought for the independence of the country and his six brothers and other patriots who had the same will.

In order to visit the memorial, you have to pass by national schools for the deaf and blind. Contrary to plain school walls, here the walls have tile wall painting. Wall paintings that you may see at the Wall of Hope at Cheonggye-cheon are here at schools for the deaf and blind. The wall, fifty meters in length has beautiful tile wall paintings. There are children’s’ hopes and dreams on the wall, interesting proverbs and sayings are on the wall as well. Especially, tile wall painting with fingerprints and braille points attracts attention. Perhaps students at the school for the blind made the wall painting. I presume the students’ message looking at fingerprints and touching Braille points. For a while I look into children’s heart and look back myself in the past.

Woodang Memorial is a one-story building with an area of 409.97 ㎡. Inside the memorial there are six corners that exhibit various photographs, newspapers and relics. Just as other fighters for national independence, Woodang Hoiyoung Lee left not so many letters and relics.

However old envelopes and letter papers that he sent to his children make us feel his love for his children not as a fighter for national independence but as a father. Woodang Hoiyoung Lee disposed of his frightful amount of property and made a subsidy for the independence movement in order to fight against pillage of Japanese imperialism. After that he went to Manchuria with all his family and established new military school and trained an army for national independence and thereby paved the way for armed independence movement such as Cheongsan-li Battle. This makes us understand how great Mr. Woodang’s love for the country and sacrifice of fighter for national independence are.

In addition, the memorial screens a video especially for group of students. The video was televised at KBS’s ‘History Special’ and the memorial screens the video to help students understand history. This video is one-hour program and there are edited version of 30 minutes and 10 minutes. The memorial screens the video when a school or group visitors demand.

Attractive as a bystreet tour with sightseeing Korean-style houses

In Namsan and Bukchon, there are well-preserved Korean-style houses that are famous among foreigners. Guest houses and traditional culture experience programs are increasing and therefore Namsan and Bukchon are arranging their aspects as tourist attractions. In Cheongunhyoja-dong, which corresponds to Seochon in the Chosun Dynasty, although not as many as in Namsan and Bukchon, many Korean-style houses are widely distributed in Ogin-dong, Tongin-dong and Nuha-dong? This place is attractive as a bystreet tour with sightseeing Korean-style houses. If we do a great job at preserving and caring for this place, people from all over the world will come in groups in order to feel Korean flavor and fragrance soon just as people go to Montmartre in Paris, Hutong in Beijing and Nerudove in Prague. When walking on the bystreet, occasionally you can see famous people’s houses and beautiful houses.

Among houses in Cheonunhyoja-dong, Nosu Park’s house in Ogin-dong is the finest. The house is a two-storied house built in 1938, and it is said that the house has double construction of a Western-style house and a Korean-style house. When looking at the house from the outside, the white wall and roofing tile are antique.
There are many good restaurants in the Tongin market.

Tongin market is a traditional market, and there are various stores such as dried fish store, grocery and vegetable store on both sides of the 300 meters’ passage. In the market people still bargain over the prices and quarrel. Of course there are good restaurants in the market. After all you have to be a very good cook in order to sell food to critical traders.

Tongin Market is no exception. There is a restaurant introduced as a good restaurant on TV and the Internet. An old lady owns ‘Hyoja-dong Old Tteokbokki House’ that mainly sells Ddeokbokki (a pan-fried dish of sliced rice cake with minced meats, vegetables, and various seasons). The food is large in quantity. A special character of her tteokbokki is that there is no soup in tteokbokki. The taste is well-known. It costs 3000 won for one dish and it’ll taste better when you are hungry or when you have no appetite.

On the opposite side of Tongin Market, there is a famous seolleongtang(Korean soup cooked in stock with cow bones, internals, rice and beefs) restaurant. The name is Baeksong. Established in 1983, Baeksong has sold only seolleongtang for 26 years and is famous for heavy broth and plentiful lean meat. Until now people who can’t forget the taste visit Baeksong at weekends. When you satisfy your appetite and come down to Hyoja-ro, you will meet a new world. There are fine cafes and galleries. It will be also nice to drink a cup of tea and visit a gallery.

Recommended Tour Course/ Jongno Tour by Psychological Tests
Isn’t another pleasure of travel delicious food?

If you personally choose restaurants of your taste through psychological test then you will feel extraordinary pleasure. There are atmosphere group, taste group and group fusion.

Atmosphere group are easily influenced by atmosphere and a quiet and serene place, rather than a crowded place, suit them. Taste group think that eating good food is the only pleasure and choose familiar foods, and group fusion plunge into something that is interesting to them and try to create something rather than standing for something as it is.

‘Jae-dong Baeksong (white pine tree)

Six hundred years in the yard of the Constitutional Court in Bukchon

Jae-dong Baeksong, the natural monument no.8

There is a big tree that can testify Korean history in the yard of the Constitutional Court in Jae-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Envoys of the Chosun Dynasty brought the tree from China, but the tree is well adapted to Korean ground and now it is a famous aborigine. In the past the tree listened to laughter of students at Changdeok Girls’ High School and now it listens to historical judgment of stern justices. It is a beautiful tree with white spots on the bark.

It is said that the tree slowly grows and difficult to move so that it doesn’t grow well outside of China. However, the tree has lived well for 600 years. The tree is about 15 meters tall. Two big trunks that have split into two pieces from the ground are wide open. Two iron wires are tied to the tree firmly and the tree is propped up with a support. And yet the trunk that stretches to the east almost touches the bottom. However the white skin, the biggest characteristic of the white pine tree, is most of all beautiful. The white skin beautifully matches the thick trunks. The circumference of the trunk at the height of a person’s chest is 2.1 meters for the thicker trunk and the other trunk that stretches to the east is 1.7 meters in circumference. At the root, there is a scar from surgical operation. Nevertheless, the tree has an atmosphere that overwhelms the surroundings.

The tree has been there for a long time and has seen the modern history of Korea. Now the tree is standing at the Constitutional Court that determines serious affairs of the country and settles the history of an era. Maybe the tree is praying to God for right and just decisions to be made at important moments of Korea. It seems that the white color of Jae-dong white pine tree symbolize a dearest wish that prays for better Korea and peaceful world.

Let’s go! Tourist attractions of Yeongwol!

Yeongwol-gun formed pact of sisterhood with Jongno-gu for friendly cooperation in the culture and sightseeing sector in June 2003, and Yeongwol-gun is the center of culture, transportation, education and commerce of southern Gangwon-do and it is a place that has beautiful nature and cultural heritage. ‘Danjong Culture Festival’ Praises Pity for Danjong

The 6th king of the Chosun Dynasty, Danjong(1441-1457), is the hero of the saddest history of the 500 years of the Chosun Dynasty. Danjong became the king of the country when he was 12 years old, and his uncle, Suyangdaegun, usurped the throne and sent Danjong into exile to Cheonglyeongpo, Yeongwol, and bestowed poison to Danjong when Danjong was seventeen years old. Yeongwol-gun celebrates the Danjong Culture Festival every year to condole with Danjong and other loyal subjects in their suffering.

[Reproducing the State Funeral for Danjong] ‘The State Funeral for Danjong’ became unique culture contents of Yeongwol-gun and now it is a national cultural event. Together with Foreign Tourists/ The sights to be revisited by foreign tourists

I discovered ‘Bukchon’, the village of tradition and culture at the center of Jongno

Written by David A.Mason
An attractive village that has traditional Korean-style houses

Bukchon is an attractive village that holds many traditional Korean-style houses with tiled roof and stone wall. I accidentally discovered this place in fall, 1982, wandering the north of Insa-dong that is now well-known to foreign tourists and resident foreigners for traditional tea, food, artworks and souvenirs. I was fascinated by traditional Korean-style houses with elegant curves and natural patterns that are located in narrow bystreets. At that time, traditional living styles and culture and art made the place deemed as a special place of Seoul.

Bukchon is located in the north of Anguk subway station on the foot of Bugak Mountain that is between Gyeongbok Palace and Changdeok Palace. Seoul has played the role as the capital of Korea from 600 years of the Chosun Dynasty to 21st century and Bukchon has been regarded as a place that creates prosperity, health and wisdom through the theory of divination based on topography. However houses with many buildings and yards have been reduced in scale under the rule of Japanese imperialism and although the unique characteristics still remain, Bukchon started to go through fast changes. In particular, Bukchon went through more changes since 1960s because of industrialization under the government’s initiative. Somebody thought the changes are positive. However there were many other people who thought that the changes are negative.

Nowadays Bukchon is designated as ‘Korean-style Houses Preservation Area’.

However, buildings in modern style are taking the place. Therefore though there were more than 600 Korean-style houses 26 years ago when I walked about with deep emotion, now there are only 100 Korean-style houses.

But many owners of the houses are reconstructing their houses to be houses with durable and convenient modern building’s inside and clean and elegant Korean-style outside. Therefore even if the houses are not houses as cultural assets as tourists want them to be, it is a place fully meaningful to walk around and take pictures.

Craftsmen of traditional Korean industrial arts are performing art activities

In Bukchon there are many houses of neo traditionalists’ houses and houses that have been preserved from the past in harmony, and in those houses craftsmen of traditional Korean industrial arts are performing art activities, and visitors can observe their workplaces and buy their artworks at low prices. Many little museums, such as chicken museum, Gahoi Folk Painting Museum and embroidery and accessories museum, are located on the bystreets. In addition you shouldn’t miss the Buddhist temple located at the center of Bukchon that provides free green tea to tourists and Jungang High School that was background for the famous Korean drama ‘Winter Sonata’. There are Korean-style houses that are remodeled into guest houses and many famous Korean restaurants that you can taste various traditional Korean foods. At the Royal Court Cuisine Research Institute you can taste Korean meal that kings and queens tasted in the past and you can also learn to cook Korean meal. There are also traditional cafes and stores that sell pottery of high level.

I still enjoy feeling many things walking about the streets of Bukchon, and I discover new things and feel Korean history and meet newly born culture. The bystreet exploration is valuable and while I walk around for a few hours I feel like I am far away from noisy and crowded Seoul even though Bukchon is located at the center of Seoul.
Bolder attempts should be made in order to solve problems

My trip to Bukchon starts with looking at the 600-year-old white pine tree in the yard of the Constitutional Court. I feel the spirit of this region when I see branches of the tree that stretches beside the huge granitic building. ‘Bukchon Culture Center’ also helps you understand the unique culture of this region.

However, I feel that something is lacking. Although there have been many positive changes thanks to attempts to make this region a tourist attraction, there are still problems to solve. Foreign language service at museums, restaurants and cafes, photo information signboards and directional signs are to be supplemented. Biggest problem is that traditional Korean-style houses are not open to general visitors. City office of Seoul and Jongno-gu office should be try bolder attempts in order to solve the problems and only through this shall Bukchon be the best tourist attraction just as the value Bukchon has now. In addition, Bukchon will be considered as a treasury of Korean traditions by foreigners.
