The sample dataset, which is described in the introduction, has 1340 arrivals on runway 18R is 



plotted in Figure 3 with the mean, upper control limit (UCL) and lower control limit (LCL) super 

imposed on the chart.  

UCL = 

 + 3s where   = mean and s = standard deviation, and LCL =   – 3s  

The control limits help to identify the outliers in the datasets.  The critical characteristic of all 

eight datasets is that there are no outliers on the lower end of their distributions.  More than 99% 

of the data points can be found within the control limit thresholds as one would expect for a 

nearly normal distribution.
