CHAIRMAN’S CHATTER
We have just had a successful and very eventful Commemorative D-J and wish to pass on our congratulations to Ian Holmes and the VVC organizing team and, in particular, to Pierre Cronje the Clerk of the Course, for a fine accomplishment. This was the 41st running of the event.
And we congratulate Martin Davis on his clear win and for becoming just the fourth three-time D-J Winner.

It was very special to us that no less than three of our DJ family came all the way from Australia to take part in the rally. Accordingly, our gratitude and very best wishes go to Dorian Radue, Mike Shield and Jonathan Wightman. We were also encouraged by Jonathan’s parting words, Schwarzeneger-style, when he said “We’ll be back”!

Full reports and detailed results are included in this issue.
Yours, in good riding,
MICHAEL MS

FEBRUARY CLUB NIGHT
A number of special guests we welcomed to the Club Night of 28 February. Dorian Radue was in from Australia and will take part in the DJ. Alistair Gibson was here from the UK and, of course, we were delighted to also have his father, Al Gibson, with us.
Ralph Pitchford was warmly congratulated on his being elected South Africa’s Motorsportsman of the Year for 2010.
Mike announced the results of the CMC Pre-DJ and Autumn Run and the Motorcyclist of the Month award was given to Fritz Kraehmer for the best overall score in that event.

Our Chairman wished all entrants a good run on the DJ.
It was all about the DJ next and Pierre Cronje confirmed that the route had been finalised. He further reported that the roads were generally good except for the road out of Newcastle towards Majuba. Competitors were advised to allow at least an hour to get through the stop-go sections in order to get to the start on time.
Brandon Madgwick then arranged his Quiz on the history of the DJ and it was most enjoyable with nice prizes of wine with pictures of the Schlesinger Vase for the winning team. The winning table was the one where Ric Lewis and his team-mates sit.
The usual raffle took place with some really nice prizes and there were a number of charmed winners.
Brandon reported that the DJ Website was progressing well and those who wished to visit it should go to www.djrun.co.za Anyone who had anything to contribute to this website should pass it on to Brandon. One of the records missing from the website data was the 2009 DJ Entry List. Anyone with a copy of this list is requested to pass a copy on to Brandon, preferably in electronic form.
The attendance was 67 members and guests.
IAN HOLMES.

The 2011 VVC DJ Commemorative Motorcycle Rally
This year saw the 41st running of the Commemorative DJ and it was the 98th year since the first race was run in 1913. This year’s special DJ brochure listed 134 entrants but sixrteen of them did not make it to the start. That meant that 118 hopefuls gathered at the Hillcrest Corner Shopping Centre on March 10th to prepare for the annual regularity run to Johannesburg and the familiar scenes of high activity were again evident in the parking garage.
There is a very special buzz about the place with some just calmly preparing their route schedules after scrutineering and others attempting to complete all the preparation work that should have been done during the year! The Hillcrest Corner Centre is very suited to be the base camp for the event with all one needs in terms of shops, eating places and other facilities and the Centre management is happy to have us, which is a bonus. This year they had even printed special posters which were on display all over the Centre advertising the fact that we would be there. Old friendships are renewed, new ones made and a great deal of cheerful rivalry is evident.
Friday morning saw the bikes leaving in perfect weather and by 08h19 the last machine would have left. The route was familiar to the experienced with no real changes before the first fuel stop in Pietermaritzburg but by then the temperature was already climbing fast. Town Hill follows that fuel stop and already there were some casualties among the machines. Mooi River follows a meander through Howick and Nottingham Road and some riders were learning about the challenges of navigation and keeping to time! More fuel was taken in Mooi River and then on to Estcourt for lunch with the Rotary Club.

Ralph Pitchford on the Starting Line with his 1926 Triumph Model P.
The lunch stops this year were shortened somewhat and that is when the minutes really fly by. At about four kms out of Estcourt there was an interesting diversion onto the Colenso road which caught some out but what a nice change that made with better road surfaces and scenery.

By the time Ladysmith was reached the sun was punishing the riders and the old machines as the mercury climbed, which made the new compulsory refreshment stop at Gerald’s Rest most gratefully engaged. The last machines reached Newcastle just after four in the afternoon. That evening the pub was naturally full of war stories and accounts of “what might have been”.
Saturday saw a free section for the Start had been moved out to Ingogo Station (to avoid a rather tricky section of road works) and that led straight on to Majuba Pass and the first fuel stop at Volksrust. Day 2 is always about long stretches between towns and there is not much that can make the Standerton-Greylingstad road attractive at all. Lunch was taken in Heidelberg and then the weather had the final say by drenching us around Alberton on the way in to the Finish at the James Hall Museum of Transport.
Once again under Pierre Cronje’s leadership we enjoyed an excellent event which was well organized and most importantly finished without any serious mishaps to the participants. However, one entrant did experience a nasty fire which did a lot of damage to his machine.
The prize giving breakfast at the VVC clubhouse went off well and congratulations go to the winner Martin Davis and everyone else who made it and to collect a Finisher’s Medal. Gwyneth Cronje graciously gave out the trophies and awards while well known motoring personality “Spotty” Woodhead was there to present the winner with the historic Schlesinger Vase on behalf of the Rand Motoring Club. This magnificent trophy, which will be 100 years old in 2014, always adds something very special to the occasion.
We look forward to seeing everyone back again next year.
IAN HOLMES.

CONVINCING WIN IN DJ CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE RALLY
Martin Davis, riding a 1930 Sunbeam, scored a convincing win in the annual two-day DJ Rally for classic motorcycles that took place between Durban and Johannesburg last Friday and Saturday (March 11-12). He had an overall error of 192 sec. at the average speed time controls to finish 53 sec. ahead of last year’s winner, Kevin Robertson (1936 Velocette).
Third place was filled by the 1934 Sunbeam Lion and sidecar combination of Adrian Hollis and his father Gerald, who were 6 sec. behind Robertson, with Mike Ward (1935 Velocette) a further 3 sec. in arrears. The first four finishers are all members of the Vintage Motorcycle Club.

Martin Davis happily receives the Schlesinger Vase from “Spotty” Woodhead of the Rand Motoring Club.
All the competing motorcycles in the DJ Rally, which is the major event of the year for classic motorcyclists in SA, have to be 1936 or earlier models so they would have been eligible for the last road race between Durban and Johannesburg, held in 1936. The first of these popular races between the two cities was staged in 1913 and in 1936 the authorities decreed that racing on public roads was too dangerous, so this year’s rally marked the 98th year since the first race was staged.
In 1969 the late Dick Osborne, himself an avid motorcyclist, persuaded a group of fellow-enthusiasts to organise a commemorative DJ Rally using the roads that made up the route of the original race. The first DJ commemorative rally took place in 1970 and it has been staged every year since then except for 1974 when the authorities refused permission due to the fuel shortage.
The format of the event has changed from a “first past the winning post” road race to a competitive regularity rally where riders have to try and ride as close as possible to set average speeds. Their performances are monitored by hidden marshals placed along the route who take the time as each competitor passes a check point.
This year’s finishing record of 84 motorcycles from 118 starters, out of an initial entry of 134, was surprisingly high considering the hot weather, age of the motorcycles and the arduous nature of the route, which is particularly hilly on the first day, when the riders travelled from Hillcrest Corner, near Durban, to the overnight stop in Newcastle.

The only major incident during the 2011 rally was a burned out 1931 Rudge Ulster which had caught fire when the engine backfired near Heidelberg on the second day. Rider John Allison was unharmed.
Edwin White was more fortunate as he was able to extinguish a blaze that started when the overfull tank of his BSA “Round Tank” dripped onto the spark plug.
The oldest rider in the 2011 DJ, Stewart Cuninghame, who is 88 years old, put up an excellent performance on his 1930 Norton to finish in 10th position.
The expected battle between Simon Fourie, editor of BIKE SA magazine, and superbike rider Clinton Pienaar, editor of SUPERBIKE magazine, did not materialise. Fourie was taken to hospital with kidney stones two days before the start, while Pienaar only rode the first day as he had to instruct at a superbike track day on the Saturday.
Ralph Pitchford, who was recently voted 2010 Motorsportsman of the Year by the SA Guild of Motoring Writers for his exploits over the years in the Dakar Rally, finished 11th overall on a 1926 Triumph after a tough first day when his low powered machine battled in the hilly terrain.
Three women qualified as finishers, with Bev Jacobs (1935 Triumph) the highest placed overall in 15th position.
Although the DJ Rally is a Vintage and Veteran Club event, it was organised by a team from a number of organisations. Clerk of the Course Pierre Cronje, who is also chairman of the Classic Motorcycle Club, said he was very happy with the way the event ran and there were no protests.

DJ Happenings
Following the unfortunate fire which nearly destroyed his 1931 Rudge Ulster, John Allison already plans to rebuild the machine for the 2012 D-J. If anyone can help John out with engine and other Ulster parts, they should contact him on 072 108 4280.
Ivor Carlson is similarly in need of bits after his Sunbeam Model 9 shed its rear section of the mudguard together with numberplate, rear lamp and a catch for the rear stand. See his advert under “Sunbeam” on page 18.
DJ Sponsorship
We had great support from Castrol who provided a Castrol cap for each rider plus 5 litres of their XL40 motor oil. The rally organizers had then arranged for each cap to be personalized with the riders’ first name and the make of his machine, in authentic colours. At the Sunday prizegiving, the leading riders responded by wearing their Castrol caps, podium style, when photographed with their awards.
This all reminds us that, from 1979 to 1986, the event was known as the Rand Daily Mail - Castrol DJ Run.
Consolidated Auctioneers made a generous financial donation and were always in the picture with their sweep vehicle and by providing a meal and drink for each competitor at the finish. They also handed out a carry bag to each rider. Although these storage bags are designed for bicycles, they have a capacity of 3 kgs and are easily mounted on rear carriers of motorcycles.
NCS Nevsway Conveyor Supplies provided all the safety bibs and BIKE SA similarly provided the 2011 DJ tee-shirts.
The souvenir rally plates were again produced by Rikki and Dick Maizey and were most attractive. In addition to promoting Maizey Engineering and Consolidated Auctioneers, the plates included, in cameo, an 80th Birthday greeting for Tullio Bernardi.
Generous cash donations were received from Anderson Engineering, which went towards the Friday dinner, from African Electroplating, towards the Finisher’s medals and from Ceebee Debt Management, which went towards the Thursday dinner.
The organizers also acknowledge the valuable travel assistance of Turnkey Hydraulics, Majuba Lodge and Newcastle Inn during the route survey operations.
Last, but certainly not least, further financial assistance was generously given by Ultra Reconditioners, Randburg Coin, P P E and some true DJ enthusiasts who wished to remain anonymous.

Showing their ages! Des Burton (Norton) and Mike Milner-Smyth (Excelsior) displaying their age-related rally numbers.

The answer to last month’s Crossword competition.

Our congratulations go to Peter Posniak who sent in the first correct entry for Edgar Bradley’s Crossword No 3. Peter will receive a prize of Autosol Chrome Polish!
