The weather in the United States
“Ms. Parks, tell us something about the weather in different cities in the United States. Is there a city where it’s always warm?”
“Yes, there are many cities where it’s almost warm. San Diego, for example, is a beautiful place in California where the temperature is always about 78 degrees. That’s the temperature in Fahrenheit. It’s the same as 26 degrees Celsius.”
“Are there any other cities where it’s always hot?”
“Many. Most of the cities in the Southern part of the United States are warm all year. Some, like New Orleans, are very hot in the summer. There is little breeze, and the air is often humid and heavy.”
“Are there any cities where it rains a lot?”
“Several! Two good examples are Seattle, in Washington D.C., and Portland, Oregon. The people in that part of the United States say that it seems to rain every day. They are very happy when there is a sunny day.”
“Tell us about some cold cities.”
“In the North there are many cities which are very cold in winter. Boston and Chicago are two of them. On some days in the winter it seems that there is no colder place in the world than a city like Boston or Chicago.”
“Is it always cold in Chicago and Boston?”
“Oh, no. On the contrary, there are many beautiful days, especially in the spring and autumn. The sun shines; the sky is clear and blue; and people walk along the streets or sit in the park in the sun.”
