Electricity From Light
Light energy, when falling on certain materials such as selenium or silicon, produces electricity. The amount of electricity from each cell is small, but it can be used to operate a light meter for photography or for other measurements of illumination. Light energy is also used to turn on lighting systems automatically at night and turn them off in the morning, to open and close doors, and to control industrial operations.
Solar cells, or a sun battery, made up of silicon and silicon crystals convert sunlight directly and efficiently into useful amounts of electricity. Electricity from a solar battery can be used to operate radio and communications equipment and other small apparatus. Solar batteries are a potential important source of current in isolated places where commercial power is not available.
