Heat and Temperature
Heat is energy. It is not matter. It is a form of energy. When you heat a substance, you give energy to it.
Cooling a substance
means taking heat energy from it.
Temperature measure shows how hot a substance is. Heat moves from hot to cold. Thus, it moves from a high temperature to a low one. So, when you heat a substance, heat moves from the surroundings to the substance. The temperature of the substance increases. That of the surroundings decreases. If you cool a substance, heat moves from that substance to the surroundings. The temperature of the substance decreases. That of the surroundings increases.
Melting and boiling take energy. Condensing and freezing give energy. When something is melting, freezing, condensing or boiling, the temperature does not change.
Movement of heat from one place to another is called heat transfer.
