Conversation
Two years ago, before he married Susan, Miry taught English in Baku. He taught at an institute for adult students. One evening he went to another institute to give some oral examinations.

Miry: You speak English very well. I’m going to give you

a very good mark. Don’t worry.

Student (Girl): Thank you very much.

Miry: Not at all. Oh, when you go out, please tell the next

student to come in.

Student: Certainly. Good bye (Goes out, closing door. Short

pause. Another person comes in).

Woman: Excuse me. Are you Mr. Kasimov?

Miry: Yes. You don’t know me, of course. I don’t teach

here. I just give oral exanimations here now and

then. Don’t be nervous.

Woman: Nervous? Who? Me?

Miry: Now, sit down please. I’m going to ask you a few

questions. Then we’re going to have a short

conversation in English. Do you understand?

Woman: Yes, of course I do. But may I ask you something first?

Miry: After the examination, please. Just concentrate on my

questions for the moment. First, why are you

learning English?

Woman: Why am I learning English?

Miry: Yes. I mean, what are you going to do with it? Are

you going to be a teacher of English, or what?

Woman: Please stop just a second. I really must ask you

something first.

Miry: (irritated) Well, if you insist.

Woman: Would you like a cup of coffee?

Miry: Pardon? What did you say?

Woman: You see, I’m English, too. I’m one of the teachers

here. I came to ask if you would like a cup of coffee.
