AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:

Mrs. Nicole Leigh and Mrs. Michelle Scaccia, Coaches, were present at the meeting to address and answer any questions regarding the new Pantherette Spiritline. They stated that in the past, the numbers were not there to support both a Cheerleading team and a Pantherette squad. So, their vision was to take the talent and combine the girls into 1 team. IHSA is now recognizing team dance as a competitive sport. The new team will be its own entity – own sport – comparable to volleyball, basketball or softball. The dance team will be very competitive and rigorous. It will be an “all year” sport. In the summer, they will hold a Kiddie Camp and will be performing at Party in the Park in South Wilmington the last weekend in July. They will also attend 2 camps: 1 Cheer Camp in June and 1 Dance Camp in July. In the Fall, they will perform at the Dwight High School Football Field during half-time and possibly at the University of Illinois during a half-time cheer show. They will also attend 4 Dance Competitions during the months of Nov, Dec and Jan. The girls will be participating in fund raisers, selling concessions at baseball & softball games and selling 50/50 tickets to help with their expenses.

Board Member, Katy Wepprecht, expressed her concern with the new Pantherette Spiritline not marching with the GSW band in the 2 parades = Dwight Harvest Days & Morris Corn Festival. She would like to see all the girls (the entire team) march in front of the band for both parades.

Audience members Tami Finn and Debbie Tjelle commented that the Pantherette Spiritline should be marching in the parades with the GSW band. They stated that they did not agree with splitting the team and making only the Fresh/Soph girls march. It should be all members, regardless of age / grade level. The girls need to stay together as a team.

Board member Kori Speed stated that she would like to see the dance team march with the band, as it is a 50-year plus tradition. She thanked Mrs. Leigh and Mrs. Scaccia and informed them that she is in full support of the new Panterette Spirit Line but would really like to try and make it work for the girls to stay marching / performing with the GSW band.
Board member, Craig Male, said that the program has changed over the last 50-years and it is not the same as the traditional Pantherette team. He stated that the board is in support of the new idea of changing directions and combining Cheer and Dance into 1 team. We have enthusiastic coaches and students. The board is taking a step forward to a new, positive approach and supporting a new program for our students.
