Factors Influencing the Natural Law: Impact of Purchasing Power, Education, Culture & Employment

It is well known that gender inequality is a very complex function of many factors, some of which are guided not only by economic forces but also by cultural, social, demographic, occupational, spatial, custom based and institutional phenomena. What is more, it is not even clear what is ‘prior’ or what is ‘after’; that is, what is ‘cause’ and what is ‘effect’. In a sense, therefore, sequence of time matters phenomenally in explaining such complex social behaviour over a very long period of time. Any cross section analysis may lead to unwarranted outcome unless the models are properly defined and the data set is strictly scrutinized. So given the investigative nature of the present study, an attempt is made here to see the importance of the aforesaid factors in the determination of sex ratio and female work participation taking ‘Indian districts as the units of analysis. We have also additionally tested the impact of gender inequality on economic development of a region. In all the cases the results are highly convincing with all the nice properties being maintained. Also, the IVs explain a very high proportion of the target variables, sex ratio.12 The results of the OLS regression are presented in Tables 9(a) and 9(b) for rural areas and Tables 10(a) and 10(b) for urban areas. Tables 11(a), 11(b) and 11(c) present the results for the pooled data for 1991 and 2001.
