Chairperson

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

  1. SUMMARY OF PROGRAMS

Student Population: The Department of Psychology remains one of the largest and fastest growing departments in FAS, with a student body of 223 majors in 2015-2016.

Faculty Recruitment: The Department of Psychology posted four advertisements for faculty positions in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, clinical psychology, and developmental psychology. Dr. Julien Besle and Dr. Zahra Hussain will be joining the department in 2016- 2017 (cognitive and neuroscience). One search was unsuccessful, which may lead the department to re-advertise a line in Child Clinical Psychology in 2016.
Psychology Labs: Two psychology labs continue to be fully used by faculty and students for research and educational purposes: the Psychology and Communication Lab (Nicely 207) is mostly used for pedagogic purposes, while the Experimental Psychology Lab (Jesup 107) is mostly used for faculty and graduate student research.
Research: The Department remains active in several research areas spanning the disciplines in psychology. Faculty research areas include neuroimaging of creativity, dual pathways of collective action, inter-sectarian relations, post-traumatic growth, positive psychology, and behavioral research on affect in children with Autism.
Program Review: The Department completed a comprehensive Program Review in Spring of 2016. The self-study exercise aims to identify strengths and weaknesses of the psychology program, and would allow faculty to reflect strategically on the department’s plans and needs. Two external reviewers visited the campus and interviewed faculty, staff and students. The final report was significantly positive, but also stressed the need to recruit more faculty, acquire additional physical space for offices and labs, and explore the preconditions to launching a PhD program in psychology (e.g. accredited mental health services etc.).
MA Programs: The department offers two successful MA programs (MA in Psychology, & MA in Clinical Psychology), and serves 16 graduate students.

Psychology Colloquia: The Department of Psychology hosted nine colloquia: “Procedural Chunks Identification in the Game of Chess” by Jana Krivec, “Maternal History of Distress and How It Can Potentially Shape Child Development: Knowledge Gained from Neuroendocrinological Evidence” by Andria Spyridou, “Probing Sensory Representations using Neuroimaging” by Julien Besle, “Learning from the Mate Choices of Others” by Robert I Bowers, “Experience-Dependent Changes in Normal and Atypical Human Vision” by Zahra Hussain, “Psychology at the American University of Beirut: A Journey through Time” by Shahe S. Kazarian, “The “Arab” Personality: Quantitative and Qualitative Findings on a Personality Model and Test for the Arab-Levant” by Pia Zeinoun, “Issues in the Measurement of Intimate Partner Violence: Alexithymia as an Automatic Bias” by Patricia Eid, “Developmental Origins of Psychological Health” by Paul De Cock.

Psychology Website: The Department of Psychology’s website is available at http://www.aub.edu.lb/fas/psychology.
Civic Engagement and Service: The Department of Psychology continued to engage the wider community, and collaborated with various partners (e.g. AUBMC Psychiatry, AUB counseling etc.) to promote mental health issues. Faculty are also involved with the Lebanese Ministry of Health in its’ efforts to develop a national mental health strategy. Furthermore, faculty in the department continue to dedicate their time and expertise to service the community through applied research projects or training and supervision (e.g. Medecins du Monde, Syrian refugees in the Bekaa Valley).

Psychology Student Society: The Psychology Student Society (PSS) continued to be one of the most active student societies in FAS. The PSS organized a series of events during the academic year that included presentations and talks, a bake sale for Embrace, a mental health sensitization event, a farewell gathering for two departing faculty members, and extra-curricular social events for the society’s members.
