Farrant, John Lascelles b 21.10.1897 Gooseberry Hill d 24.1.1988 Gooseberry Hill. John Farrant born and bred at Gooseberry Hill. His family were pioneers to the area. His first home was a mud and stone cottage, in John Farrant Drive, Gooseberry Hill. Spent most of his life in the hills, moving away at age 14, to run a 360ha wheatbelt property at Nungarrin, with his brother. Ran his mother’s dairy farm, after his father died in 1927. Delivered cream to customers in the district. Also worked the orchard and vegetable farm at Gooseberry Hill. Some called him “Reverend John’, as he never swore. BSc 1940 at University of WA. Completed 1^st class Honours degree in Physics. MSc 1946. Physicist, Commonwealth X-ray & Radium Laboratory 1941-45 in Melbourne. Research officer in the Chemical Physics Section, CSIR/O Division of Industrial Chemistry (later Division of Chemical Physics) 1945-82, and Chief Research Scientist 1982. In 1945 appointed to form an electron microscopy group to set up and use the new electron microscope. Completed a Master of Science degree. On executive committee of International Federation of Societies for Electron Microscopy. On editorial advisory board for 2 international journals. In 1974 organised the 8^th international congress for electron microscopy in Canberra. Worked on a revolutionary vacuum pump, to improve the efficiency of electron microscopes. Married Warren, Patricia 7.12.1945. Lived in Leederville and then Melbourne. Lived North Balwyn Vic in 1990.
