The e-Science Initiative has been subjected to an international review by members of the international grid community and has received valuable and complementary comments on its wide range of activities.
Vision
The UK government has launched the Science and Innovation Investment Framework which is a 10 year forward look for science investment. e-Science and e-infrastructure are a part of that framework. It is too early to know what the specific impact and funding will be for e-Science. However, the government’s long-term commitment to increase the ratio of the total UK R&D spending as a proportion of GDP from the current level of around 1.9% to 2.5% by 2014.
Strategy
Within the various components of the e-Science Initiative roadmaps are being developed, for example OMII has developed a road map which is available on their web site. In addition, the e-Science Steering Committee is monitoring the developments within the individual Research Councils and planning and proposing the incorporation of e-Science as an embedded part of the activities of all the Research Councils’ funding. In addition, the Director of the Core Programme is developing a future strategy.
Joint Initiatives and Projects
Several joint bilateral initiatives have been established with a number of countries and promoted by means of workshops and exchange visits. Joint project funding is difficult as a result of different funding mechanisms and rules.
Recommendations
The e-Science Initiative has been devised with a specific set of phases and components to exploit the activities and expertise of both the academia and industrial communities in the UK. In a relatively short space of time it has had a major impact on scientific research and industrial development and exploitation. The model is appropriate for consideration and for rolling out across Europe.
Annex
Organisational information and committees
The Director of the Core e-Science Programme is Professor Tony Hey who is seconded to the EPSRC to direct the programme on behalf of all the Research Councils. Dr Anne E Trefethen acts as Professor Hey’s deputy and Dr Jim Fleming is the Associate Programme Manager at the EPSRC. In 2003 Dr Rebecca Steliaros, an Associate Programme Manager at EPSRC, also joined the team. Krys Bartoszewska and Carol Becker provide the programme support at EPSRC. The DTI team consists of Ray Browne, who is the e-Science team leader at the DTI and who co-ordinates all the DTI activity within the programme and his colleagues Lee Vousden and Jackie Whalley.
The e-Science Programme is overseen by a Steering Committee chaired by Professor David Wallace, Vice-Chancellor of Loughborough University. The membership of the Steering Committee includes representatives from industry and commerce as well as all the Research Councils.
In addition there is an infrastructure consisting of a number of advisory committees:
-
Technical Advisory Group (TAG)
-
The Technical Advisory Group is made up of UK and international academics and industrial members, who are able to advise the Director on the directions of the Programme, and who act as reviewers for the e-Science Centres and their projects.
-
Architecture Task Force (ATF)
-
The Architectural Task Force, led by Professor Malcolm Atkinson, was established to develop an architectural model for the UK's contributions to grid middleware. The group have been active in helping to develop the OGSA architecture and have continued to advise the directorate on the likely near and long-term developments in grid technologies.
-
Engineering Task Force (ETF)
-
The Grid Engineering Task Force was formed to guide the construction, testing and demonstration of a prototype UK e-Science Grid. It contains members from each of the UK e-Science Centres and the Grid Support Centre.
-
Security Task Force (STF)
-
The Security Task Force has been formed to help understand and prioritise the security issues of the Grid. The Task Force has created a Security Policy for the programme and is developing a technology roadmap for the UK.
