In France most activities were led by the ACI GRID National Research programme (Incentive Concerted Action for the Globalization of Computing Resources and Data). This programme was granted in 2001 a total budget of 2.3 M€ and 3 M€ in 2002. As of 2003, all the projects are focused on Grid'5000, and the ACI GRID will not be re-conducted. Its projects are now being taken over by the ACI MD National Research programme on Data Masses and the ACI Security and Informatics National programme. These are expected to hold on for a couple of years, but the future is not very clear on the official programme funders, as a new governmental funding structure has just been created in March 2005, the ANR National Agency for Research, which could take over most of these responsibilities. Even with these political doubts, the future for Grids is very good in France, as there has been a lot of effort invested in convincing the authorities, with excellent feedback. Another way of showing how active the Grid domain is in France is to list the research groups (including the industry) which received funding from the ACI GRID in these past years: 19 projects in 2001 (more than 70 research teams), 12 projects in 2002 (more than 50 research groups), 7 in 2003 (more than 30 research groups), 6 projects in 2004 (26 research groups). The current trend is to fund less individual projects, but to have more funds available for the chosen ones. This concentration appears to be aimed at the sites which host Grid'5000, as all the nodes are not available yet. This shows how much Grid'5000 is the important project in France. Following is a summary of the various activities organized around Grid'5000.
