Brief Information :
The predecessor of the Academy, the Hungarian State Ballet Institute was founded in 1950. The status of academy was given to the institute in 1983 and today it is known as the Hungarian Dance Academy. It trains professional ballet dancers, theatrical dancers, Hungarian folk dancers, ballet-, folkdance- and ballroom dance pedagogues, choreographers as well as dance theorists. Classical ballet is taught according to the Vaganova method.
At the Hungarian Dance Academy there are two levels of education in five specializations:
1. Specialization in ballet art: training and education lasts 10 years. Students graduating from this faculty gain a ballet artist degree.
2. Specialization in dance pedagogy: is run in the form of an evening course. Applicants must have either a final examination, a qualification at a secondary school specializing in dance or a certificate of the specialization in ballet art as well as practical professional experience. The Academy has taught and trained dance teachers since 1955.
3. Specialization in choreography: in the 1998/99 academic year the Academy opened this specialization in a joint programme with the College of Dramatic Art.
4. Specialization for dance theory writers: is a programme for post-graduates. Applicants must have a university or college degree in classical studies or in the field of arts.
5. Specialization in folkdance and theatrical dance: offers an academy-level diploma as well. The students are trained in professional subjects along with their secondary school studies. This specialization was opened in 1972. Until the year 1991 the students qualifying from this faculty were only folkdance artists.
Regional and International Relations
The Hungarian Dance Academy has far-reaching links within the country and also abroad. First of all, it has fruitful connections with the Hungarian State Opera. Its co-operation with the theatres, professional folk dance and numerous modern as well as alternative ensembles of the capital is just as successful.
The Academy maintains connections with numerous international institutes training dance artists. Among are the Academies of Amsterdam, Dresden, Camberley (Elmhurst ), North-Carolina, Cologne, London, Madrid, Moscow, Riga, Rotterdam, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, Tilburg, Vienna, Wolfsegg and Zurich.
