8 LIST OF USEFUL WEBSITES 1051. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this exemplar document is to provide Grade 12 History educators with a set of benchmarked School Based Assessment (SBA) tasks which comply with the requirements of the History Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) document.
In addition to providing an exemplar of SBA tasks, the following aspects will be covered in this document:
How to plan and structure a research assignment.
How to work with historical sources to set source-based questions.
How to scaffold learning so that learners are prepared to answer School Based Assessment tasks.
Where to find additional Learning and Teaching Support Material (LTSM)
It is envisaged that this document will assist educators by ensuring that:
A common standard of SBA tasks is set, as prescribed by the CAPS document.
Quality teaching and learning of FET – Grade 12 History is promoted throughout all schools in the Western Cape.
Before planning and setting the School Based Assessment Tasks for Grade 12 History learners, all educators should familiarise themselves with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) document. Section 3, pp.25-31, details the content to be taught in Grade 12 and Section 4, pp.32-52, addresses the question of formal and informal assessment. The CAPS document can be obtained from your Curriculum Advisor or downloaded from
NB: It is anticipated that the DBE will distribute an Examination Syllabus and Exemplar at the start of 2014. This Western Cape Education Department exemplar of School Based Assessment (SBA) tasks does not, therefore, contain exemplars for the Grade 12 June and September examinations.
