‘Hopkirk’). He was a covenanting supporter who was imprisoned
after the Battle of Bothwell Brig. Later sentenced to transportation to
the American Colonies, he was drowned when the transportation ship

John was Sub Postmaster, and lived and died at the Post Office House, Townhead
Douglas. As recorded on his death certificate. His son William signed the death
certificate, William's address at the time was 6 St. Catherine Place Edinburgh.
The 1851 census has John age 14 in 59 High St. Hawick.
His sister Janet, 19 and brother Walter, 17. John is an apprentice tailor.
The 1881 census has John as a Teacher of Music and Tailor, in Main Street Douglas.
The 1891 census has John as Postmaster and employer.
