How do Zaroff in “Most Dangerous Game” and Montressor in “Cask of Amontillado” show their insanity? Support your answer with evidence from BOTH selections.

Here, it is obvious how insane Zaroff is for casually calling them students when he is actually enslaving humans to train them as quarry.

Montressor explains to the reader that “when [Fortunato] ventured upon insult, [he] vowed revenge.” (p.97)

Montressor killed Fortunato simply for insulting him. What he believed to be a justified act of revenge was actually an extreme act of unnecessary cruelty.




Zaroff and Montressor both show their insanity in the way they treat other human beings. At dinner, Zaroff shares with Rainsford the fact that he has “a dozen pupils” in the cellar. Here, Zaroff casually speaks about enslaving humans to train them as quarry. Montresor shows he’s insane too as he explains to the reader that “when [Fortunato] ventured upon insult, [he] vowed revenge.” Montresor killed Fortunato simply for insulting him. What he believed to be a justified act of revenge was actually an extreme act of unnecessary cruelty. Both characters treated other human beings in a way that only people twisted in the minds could think of.
