20 THE RECKONING 337
impatient finger from the ranks of the extremist and

fundamentalist Islamic hot-heads pressing the nuclear button is

a bit far-fetched. This argument seems to be the chief justification

for the U.S. to allow Musharraf, considered to be a moderating

influence to continue to rule as a dictator. The reality is somewhat

different. Except a suicide bomber no one in his senses wishes

to commit hara-kiri. The former as a jehadi, has the lure of

Jannat and possibly black-eyed houris in heaven. But the saner

and the majority segment of a society does not suffer from such

hallucinations. Compared to Pakistan, India has a far superior

nuclear capability, including larger number of warheads, efficient

delivery systems including even Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles

(ICBM), a very mobile response system and a credible second

strike capability. Thus, in spite of India’s commitment to a ”no

first use” policy it would be unwise for Pakistan to attempt a

pre-emptive strike. This is bound to invite a massive Indian

retaliation. While India may suffer only minor bruises, Pakistan

will just cease to exist.

Apocalypse
The world suffered a violent tremour on 11th September, 2001,

when the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon building in the

United States were bombed by Islamic militants and barely three

months later on 13th December, 2001, when the Parliament

of India was attacked by the foot soldiers of militant Islam. This

has been a watershed in human history and a defining moment

for us all. Simple equations and political paradigms of pre 9/11

era simply do not exist. Militant Islam is on the move. Whatever

its apologists may say, Islam had always been .drenched in blood

and it is splashing it everywhere now. The biggest threat to the

democracies of the world comes directly from fundamentalist

Islam and its weapon is terror. Mr. George W. Bush may couch

his words in diplomatic language for reasons of national interest,

and may even resort to mealy-mouthed semantics that his fight

is against terror and not Islam. Apocalypse’ is here and now.

The Dar-ul-lslam is out to conquer Dar-ul-Harb and wipe out

the infidel. The coalition of Christian states, hastily cobbled up

may not provide a permanent answer. Christianity, with its

enormous military might, may temporarily deflect and parry the

immediate onslaught, but its arrowhead Israeli Judaism will have

to act as its shield and permanent protector. This is one of the
f
CHAPTER 21 APOCALYPSE 339
reasons that Israel has to endure and prevail. Indian democracy

is the other enemy that militant Islam needs to destroy in fulfilling

its ’God-ordained’ mission. Let there be no mistake; the foot

soldiers of Jehad mean business. Osama-Bin-Laden and his

Al-Quaeda cohorts and their brothers operating in Jammu and

Kashmir are only the symptoms of the disease. The disease is

more deep rooted and lies in the tenets of Qoran and the praxis

of Islam. Whichever way militants Islam strikes, India and Israel

shall have to bear the brunt and defeat it. This is a heavy

burden indeed. But they are equal to the task. The fundamentalist

militants believe in the sword. They shall have it. Those who live

by the sword shall die by it. The hand that ploughs can also

smite. With their inherent civilizational strength and the call of

the times, India and Israel, Lord be praised, shall not only

endure but shall prevail. They are destined to lead.
