The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) under the Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1964 issued the GCP guidelines for establishment of institutional ethics committees in 2001.
Hence, several institutions came up with institutional ethics committees for clinical trials. There is a proposal now for mandatory registration of institutional ethics committees.
