DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRY, SCIENCE AND RESOURCES
Section 1: Overview, appropriations and budget measures summary
OVERVIEW
The primary role of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (ISR) is to foster economic advances and scientific achievements that continue to strengthen Australia’s international competitiveness.
With a fundamental role in increasing national prosperity, the Department develops and implements a range of policy and business assistance programs to build the competitiveness of Australian industry and foster excellence in Australian science, technology and sport. Good relations with the business, science and sports communities are critical to its success.
In addition, the Department provides scientific business services through the Australian Survey and Land Information Group (AUSLIG), the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories (AGAL), and IPS Radio and Space Services (IPS).
The quality analysis and advice the Department provides to the Government, and the programs it delivers, benefit all Australians by:
improving the competitiveness of Australian business;
maximising the national benefits of research and innovation;
encouraging Australian business to use technology and knowledge;
increasing productive investment in Australia;
expanding market access for Australian business;
achieving ecologically sustainable development and economic growth; and
fostering the development of an internationally competitive sport and recreation industry.
APPROPRIATIONS
The total appropriation for ISR in the 2001-02 Budget is $1,163m.
Table 1.1, on the following page, shows the total appropriation for ISR in 2001-02 by the two outcomes, by administered expenses, price of output appropriation and, where appropriate, administered capital and departmental equity injections and loans.
Table 1.2 on pages 28 to 30 summarises the measures in the 2001-02 Budget with resource implications for the Department.
