Explanation
The Government will spend $13.7m over 3 years from 2002-03 to administer the expansion of the current Policy and Project By Laws allowing greater access to tariff exemption for most major industry sectors. This will benefit local manufacturers who import capital equipment for large projects that are unavailable in Australia or where the imported version is technologically superior. Lower input tariffs will make Australian industry more efficient and competitive.
The Government has ensured that major projects to benefit from the new arrangements will offer full, fair and reasonable access to local Australian manufacturers to contracts and tenders.
