Usage of Polymerıc Hydrogels and Microgels in Drug Release Applications
Nowadays, hydrogels and microgels, which have some properties such as biocompatible, non-soluble in water and nontoxic, are often used as polymeric carriers for drug release systems.
In this thesis, thermosensitive and biocompatible N-vinyl caprolactam monomer with hydroxyethyl acrylate, itaconic acid, itaconic acid sodium salt, methacrylic acid sodium salt monomers are used at various molar ratios for synthesis of polymeric drug carrier systems based on hydrogels and microgels. Three different group gels (N-vinyl caprolactam-hydroxyethyl acrylate-itaconic acid hydrogels, N-vinyl caprolactam-methacrylic acid sodium salt hydrogels and N-vinyl caprolactam- itaconic acid sodium salt-methacrylic acid sodium salt microgels) were synthesized using these monomers in this study.
Characterizations of hydrogels and microgels were carried out with FTIR and SEM techniques.
In hydrogel studies, first, swelling and deswelling behaviors of hydrogels were investigated depending on temperature and pH. In addition, drug loading and release studies were realized at different pH values. In these studies Rhodamine B were used as model drug.
In microgel studies, first, zeta potentials, particle dimensions, cloudy points of microgels were determined. Besides, drug loading and release studies of microgels were realized with both “model drug (Rhodamine)” and “blood pressure regulatory drug (Nadolol)”.
As a result, it is observed that, all hydrogels and microgels which have been synthesized in this study can be used as polymeric carriers for drug release systems.
