Treatment Of Cyanotoxın İn Drınkıng Water By Usıng Actıvated Carbon Enhanced Coagulatıon-Immersed Membrane System
The purpose of the study is to suggest treatment efficiency of cyanotoxins in drinking water using integrated membrane system that is formed by activated carbon enhanced coagulation-immersed membrane system. In accordance with this purpose coagulation and activeted carbon is used for pretreatment.
At this stage, the optimal conditions determined in activated carbon enhanced coagulation experiments was applied. Considering the optimum conditions determined in the experiments; 60 mg/l of aluminum sulfate was added to the coagulation tank and 200 rpm was stirred for 2 minute, 0,2 mg/L of polyelectrolyte and 20 mg/L of activated carbon was added to the flocculation tank and 30 rpm was stirred for 20 min. After 60 min hold in settling tank, water has been released to submerged PES-5kDa and PES-10kDa UF membrane system.
According to microcystin-LR removal experiments performed, using integrated membrane system, 65,10%, 67,60%, 91,36%, 98,80%, 98,91% of microcystin-LR in the synthetic water was removed by aluminum sulfate, polyelectrolyte, activated carbon, PES-5kDa and PES-10kDa membrane respectively. The remaining microcystin-LR concentrations after removal are identified as 1,67 μg/L for aluminum sulfate, 1,55 mg/L for polyelectrolyte, 0,41 mg/L for activated carbon, 0,06 mg/L for PES-5kDa membrane and 0,05 mg/L for PES-10kDa hybrid membrane.

 

In PES-5kDa and PES-10kDa membrane experiments where pre-treatment is applied, both membrane microcystin-LR removal was significantly higher compared to non-pre-treatment condition. Besides, using the PES-5kDa and PES-10kDa integrated membrane systems, obtained MC-LR concentration has fallen below limit value set by WHO for drinking water (1µg/L).
