Investıgatıon Of Tsunami Traces On The Coastal Marmara Regıon
This study focuses on the determination of the tsunami traces in the coastal areas of the Marmara Region. For this purpose the core and trench samples were collected from the Küçükçekmece Lagoon in the northern side, Kocasu, Yeniköy and Kapıdağ Peninsula in the southern side of the Marmara region, Marmara islands and Saros Gulf coasts. The paleotsunami analysis which are including chemical analysis, biomerker (biochemical) analysis and dating methods were applied on two cores from Kocasu and Küçükçekmece Lagoon and 16 trench samples from the other localities. Two possible tsunami levels were identified in the Küçükçekmece core. According to the dating analysis those tsunami levels may match with 989, 1766, 1894 Marmara earthquakes. Depending on the dating results for the tsunamigenic units sampled from the trenches have been related to tsunamigenic Marmara earthquakes 740, 989, 1039, 1064, 1829 in the southern Marmara; 1265, 1332, 1343 in the Marmara Island. There are some trench samples coincidence with the 427/399-395 BC earthquakes accured in the Marmara Sea, 1010 and 1456 earthquakes in the Saros region are defined as well, although there are no information about the tsunamigenic impact of those earthquakes in the historical records. Furthermore, the sample locations are tried to test by numerical modelling process with 989, 1265 and 1343 earthquakes.
