Online Resources:

MyPsychLab: MyPsychLab (MPL) includes many resources to enhance and assess your learning in this class.  Resources include study guides, flashcards, pre- and post-tests,weblinks, simulations, videos, podcasts, audio versions of all chapters, journal articles, and guidelines for writing and research. Some assignments in this course will incorporate MPL resources.

BlackBoard: BlackBoard (BB) is a web based package that allows students access to course information, online tests, interactive assignments, discussion forums, an electronic grade book, links to IVCC resources, and much more. Login and instructions are available on IVCC’s home page. To access instructions, select “My IVCC” on the right side of the menu bar at the top of the page. Then find “BlackBoard” and click “Help”.

NOTE: I will explain and demonstrate how to use MyPsychLab and BlackBoard. If you have questions, concerns, or problems using these resources, please contact IVCC’s Student Help Desk staff and/or MyPsychLab’s technology support team.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: General Psychology is an introductory course dealing with analysis and description of human behavior with special reference to research methods, psychological influences on the brain and behavior, learning, memory, perception, motivation, emotions, personality and adjustment. Emphasis is placed on psychological principles as they relate to daily life.

EXPECTED STUDENT OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of General Psychology, students will be able to



  • Understand psychology as science based on objective study of human and animal behavior.

  • Identify and understand major theories, research, and principles in psychology.

  • Connect psychology to personal, social, vocational, physical, and spiritual aspects of life.

  • Use critical thinking skills to analyze, understand, and evaluate information and events.

  • Demonstrate understanding of human diversity, including race, ethnicity, culture, gender, abilities, sexual orientation, and age as it impacts the study of human behavior.

STUDENT SERVICES:

Many student services are available to help you succeed at IVCC. The “IVCC RESOURCES” tab at the bottom of BlackBoard’s navigation menu provides information and links to those services.



CHAPTER TESTS (posted in BlackBoard):

Chapter tests count as 200 points toward your grade. There will be eight (8) chapter tests, each consisting of twenty-five (25) multiple choice items. Chapter tests will be posted in Blackboard and taken outside of class. Each test will be available for about one week. Students must complete each test by the posted deadline.



EXAMS & PAPERS:

Exams and papers assess mastery of information, critical thinking, and application of concepts and theories discussed throughout the course. Four exams and two papers account for 200 points.



PARTICIPATION:

Participation includes attentive classroom behavior and involvement in learning, discussions in class and online, individual and group work, in-class writing and assessment, and class presentations. Participation comprises 200 points of your grade.



ATTENDANCE:

Attendance is important to everyone’s learning. Attendance will be taken every day. If special circumstances, such as medical, family, or personal issues, prevent you from attending class, please contact me.



PLAGIARISM & ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. If a student is caught cheating once, the student will receive a zero on that assignment or exam. If a student cheats a second time, that student will receive a failing grade for this course.


Plagiarism is the use of someone else’s work without documenting the source of that work. If plagiarism is found, I will meet with the student to determine whether the plagiarism was intentional. For a first offense of intentional plagiarism, the student will receive a zero for that assignment. For a second offense, the student will receive a failing grade for this course.


WITHDRAWAL:

Withdrawing from a course may affect students’ academic status, insurance, and financial aid. Students do not need the instructor’s permission to withdraw. Nonetheless, it is highly recommended that students meet with a counselor and/or the instructor before withdrawing from a class to discuss if a withdrawal is the best course of action.

 

NOTES:


  • The last day for student withdrawal is Thursday, November 8.

  • I will not withdraw any student unless that student has never attended or has specifically requested that I complete the withdrawal forms.

A = 540-600 pts.







Chapter Tests / Multiple Choice

B = 480-539 pts.







Writing Assignments / Short Answer and/or Essay

200 pts.

C = 420-479 pts.

D = 360-419 pts.

F = 0-359 pts.
