INTRODUCTION
On the succussesful completion of the INQUA Commission of the International symposium on Palaeopedology at Suzdal during 2000 and Firenze 2004 it is pleasure to organize the forthcoming International conference and field workshop On Paleopedology: Palaeosols, geomorphic evolution of landscape and paleoclimate change. Date: 10 January — 14 January 2008.
Soils form one of the important parameter in landscape evolution. Different types of soils are developed and formed on various types of bedrock. Climate plays an important factor in determining the soil type and soil formation. Rate of bedrock weathering and type of pedogenesis forming the integral part of the landscape has not been well understood. Weathering pattern and weathering rates of rocks are governed by the mineral and chemical composition of the bedrock. Soils and ecosystem also play an important role in the exchange of carbon budget and CO2 cycle in the atmosphere. Understanding soil formation as an important factor for landscape evolution demands a multidisciplinary approach.
This conference is designed to seek current understanding of soil formation under following headings: 1. Time and causes for bedrock weathering into soils with special reference to arid and tropical soils. 2. Methods for understanding soil formation and radiometric dating of soils. 3. Carbon budget and geochemistry of soils. 4. Soil micromorphology, Palaeopedology and climate change.
This international conference is foccussed in bringing together international scientists and researchers working on diferent aspects of soil formation and weathering processes.
HOST
Anna University is one of the premier institutions of higher education and advanced research in Science & Technology in India. The University was established in the year 1978 by integrating three well-known technical institutions of Chennai, namely, the College of Engineering Guindy, Madras Institute of Technology and Alagappa College of Technology.
The University offers an impressive range of academic courses namely B.E, B.Tech., M.E, M.S, M.Tech., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in various disciplines. The Department of Geology is actively involved in teaching and research through M.Sc. (Applied Geology), M.Phil. (Applied Geology) and Ph.D programmes. The department is sponsored under the UGC-SAP and DST-FIST programmes.
SOCIETAL CONTRIBUTION
The proposed conference is very significant to address the major pedology problems both in past and present periods, envisage future plans by emphasizing the importance of pedological problems and solutions. This programme will contribute to our understanding of the environmental issues of the geosphere.
THEMES OF THE CONFERENCE
-
Weathering processes.
-
Soil Physics.
-
Soil Geochemistry and micromorphology.
-
Soils and Paleoclimate study.
Field Workshop
During the conference 2 day field workshop will be organized around Chennai and Pondicherry-Neyveli to see the coastal soils and laterites.
Travel and Accomodation
Details of Travel and Accomodation will be given in the second and the third circular however delegates are requested to meet their own travel and accommodation expenses from their own resources. Partial funding will be will be granted to students on receiving funds from the funding agencies.
Accommodation will be provided for few out station participants on prior request under first come first served on charge basis. The approximate minimum tariff in the international guest house is Rs. 900/- per day.
