Change in IMU Statutes - The EC decided to recommend to the next General Assembly, additions to the IMU Statutes for the purpose of facilitating jointly sponsored activities with multi-national mathematical societies and professional societies, in pursuing the objectives of IMU (see page 35).
Manifesto/Video – It was also discussed the possibility of IMU issuing a manifesto to promote mathematics in the turn of the century, stressing its importance to society, that should also appeal to the mathematical community to engage itself in the promotion of a a more creative teaching of mathematics at all levels. Similarly, it was also raised the possibility of support the production and distribution of video recordings of lectures delivered by outstanding mathematicians and aimed at general audiences.
IMU book Mathematics Tomorrow - V. Arnold (Coordinator), M. Atiyah, P. Lax and B. Mazur are members of the Committee in charge of editing a book of articles by prominent mathematicians on how they see the prospects of mathematics in the coming century. A good number of potential authors had answered positively to the invitation. The book is expected to appear in 1999. The EC decided to invite publishers to present bids to produce the book Mathematics Tomorrow, by early December 1998
(please see page 34).
Also, a number of scientific meetings in different countries were approved to receive IMU financial support or just its imprimatur.
