Evaluation of Core Experiment for MPEG-7 Video Signature Tool

The main MPEG-7 Visual activity during the week was the evaluation of the results of Core Experiments. Documents 16698/16699 report about a minor update of the previous WD technology (removing duplication of signatures, additional bug fixing). The descriptor is using a ternary frame signature from regions of interest, from which “words” and "bags of words" (histograms) of the signature values are constructed. The total average performance over all test cases was approximately 94% hit rate average over all cases (light, medium, heavy, partial and direct matching) under the false-positive and matching-time constraints outlined in the CE description. A different method was proposed in documents 16703/16704, which is a descriptor for combined coarse and fine signature based on 5x5 block average-differences, variable descriptor size depending on temporal change. The total average hit rate under same conditions was approximately 89%.

It was therefore decided to promote the previous WD technology with the appropriate improvements to PDAM ballot, and it was recommended to concentrate upcoming Core Experiments on further improving this descriptor and the associated extraction/matching procedures in the XM. It was however noted that it may not be the ideal way to integrate the signature descriptors into the current XM structure, which would be more suitable for retrieval applications. More discussion on this is needed for the upcoming meetings, also in the context of possible future XM improvements and maintenance.
The conformance testing specification related to Photo Player MAF was promoted for FPDAM ballot.
