2General issues

2.1General discussion

2.1.1Reference Software

It is recalled that the source code of both decoder AND encoder should be provided as part of the Reference Software for all technologies to be adopted in MPEG standards. Moreover, not providing the complete software for a published technology shall conduct to the removal of the corresponding technical specification from the standard.

Currently all the AFX tools published in the third edition are supported by both encoder and decoder implementation.

2.1.2Web site

OrangeLabs announced interrupting the maintenance of the group web-site. A call for volunteers is now issued. In the meantime 3DGC contributors are asked to check the web-site and provide comments on the current version of the web-site.

4.2Scene partitioning (14496-11 Amd.6)

SP is followed as a joint activity between Systems and 3DGC. The technology is integrated in Part 11. There was no joint meeting with Systems on this topic during this meeting. The conformance and reference software documents were reviewed during 3DG Plenary and promoted as FDAM.

4.3Promotions

4.3.1Web Site

Title

Status of www.mpeg-3dgc.com

Authors

Summary

The web site is not more maintained by OrangeLab.

Resolution

Action Point: Transfer the web-site to other location and call for volunteers for maintanace.

4.4Joint activities

4.4.1MPEG-V - Information Exchange with Virtual Worlds (formally Metaverse)

Several joints meetings were carried out during the week related to MPEG-V. The 3DG interests were related to avatar characteristics, virtual object characteristics, manners to control the avatar by using real devices and manners to attach haptic properties on virtual objects.

The extensive summary of these activities is provided in MPEG-V AhG Report (m16512) and Systems final report.

4.4.2MXM

Title

Demonstration of 3DG @ MXM Developers Day

Authors

Ivica Arsov, Marius Preda

Summary

A demonstration of the 3D graphics engine implementing the MXM API was performed during the MXM DevDay. The 3DGraphicsEngine was integrated in Ogre (an Open Source rendering engine) making possible to load MP4 3D graphics files.

Additional joints meetings were carried out during the week related to MXM MultimediaFrameworkEngine. 3DG tools are part of this engine and harmonization with Video, Audio and FileFormat API is needed. The resolutions are reported in Systems final report.

4.4.3Reconfigurable Graphics Coding

Title

m16724 A big picture of RGC: Primitives based graphics codec

Authors

Seungwook Lee, Bonki Koo, Kyoungsoo Son, Daiyong Kim, Euee S. Jang

Summary

This contribution presents an approach of considering the compression at the level of graphics primitives and not at the level of object graph. The advantages would be the reusability of different modules (shared between the codecs) and the applicability of the new codec on formalisms that are not fixed (as it is today the case of direct connection between 3DMC and IFS for static objects).

Resolution

Continue the exploration as established in the AFX core experiment document (output of this meeting).

Title

m16725 An initial design of RGC: 3DMCe and IC

Authors

Daiyong Kim, Seungwook Lee, Bonki Koo, Ming Xiao Chen, Euee S. Jang

Summary

This contribution presents the design of two AFX decoders (3DMCe and IC) compliant with the RVC framework. The functional units for the two decoders as well as connection between them were identified.

Resolution

Continue the exploration by considering the other AFX codecs.

4.5Explorations

Title

M16564: Proposal for an Interoperable 3D Platform

Authors

Jerome Royan

Summary

This contribution emphasizes the need of interoperability between virtual worlds at the level of functionality. The envisaged scenario consists in using different formalisms for defining sub-parts of the scene graph while being able to communicate events captured in a sub-part to the systems and to the others sub-parts. The contribution does not propose a full technical solution but gives some possible approaches

Resolution

Continue the investigation and monitor MPEG-V and MXM developments related to 3D graphics that may address (or that can be extended for doing so) the issue.

Title

M16630: Revision of “IndexedRegionSet: Efficient Representation of Meshes with Multiple Textures”

Authors

Sergio Arnaldo, Francisco Morán, Marcos Avilés

Summary

The contribution presents a comparative evaluation of IndexedRegionSet vs. IndexedWedgeSet. It is recognized that both classify the corners of a vertex in sets but IRS is less versatile because it assumes that changes of texture happen along mesh edges and IRS is probably more practical since it allows there to be more that one texture, while IWS can only use one.

Resolution

Proceed with the Integration of IRS in the MPEG-4 RSW and perform the IRS vs. IFS bitstream size comparison

5AFX (14496-16) related activities

5.1Scalable Complexity 3D Mesh Compression (14496-16 Amd.4 -> become 14496-16:2009 Amd. 1)

Title

m16754 SC3DMC Reference Software Update

Authors

Seungwook Lee, Bonki Koo, Daiyong Kim, Kyoungsoo Son, Euee S. Jang

Summary

- some bugs in SVA were identified

- more information is needed in the spec for defining the different prediction modes

- more information is needed to explain the two parallelogram prediction schemas

Resolution

- fix the SVA bugs during the week

- during the editing period the refsoft and bitstream syntax description should be aligned. This will be done by ETRI and crosschecked by IT and UPM

Title

m16759 CE Report on SC3DMC: comparative evaluation of the QBCR configurations

Authors

Khaled Mammou

Summary

An extensive test was performed to show the advantages and disadvantages or different encoding parameters. The first conclusion is that 4C binarisation outperforms the BP binarisation in terms of execution time. The second is that combination of AC and EGC outperforms AC in terms of coding efficiency.

Resolution

Keep only the mode AC+EGC.

Investigate if BP implementation can be improved.

Title

Player for SC3DMC

Authors

Open discussion

Summary

Currently the SC3DMC reference software consists in an encoder and decoder of the elementary streams. The discussion is about finding the acceptable solution for generating MP4 formatted files.

Resolution

- use IM1 for obtaining MP4 formatted file (Khaled Mammou will integrate SC3DMC in IM1)

- regenerate the conformance file with different encoding combination

- use files that contains the maximum number of attribute types and play with the compression settings

- use files with different number of vertices to cover low and high resolution content

- update the CE description for IM1 integration

5.2Maintenance

5.2.1Reference Software

All the AFX tools have associated encoder and decoder implementations available on the SVN.

5.2.2FAMC Conformance and Reference Software

FNB reports on a problem related to FAMC reference software, namely the usage of little endian convention when writing the bitstream. This conducts to errors in parsing the FAMC bitstream when encapsulated in MP4. Resolution: issue a corrigendum on FAMC ref soft and conformance and ask the contributors to update the software and regenerate the bitstreams.

5.2.3AFX Conformance

Several working sessions were carried out for crosschecking the entire set of AFX conformance bitstreams. The final version of the document integrating all AFX conformance was issued as output of this meeting.

5.3Dataset and benchmarking

For Scalable Complexity 3D Mesh Coding, the www.MyMultimediaWorld.com will be used for benchmarking.

6.1Amendment 1

Title

Request for AMD1 of Part 25

Authors

Open discussion

Summary

Since SC3DMC is now in mature status, this AMD allows including it as a geometry codec for generic XML scene graph.

Resolution

Accepted. Nominating Marius Preda and Seung Wook Lee as editors.

6.2Software and conformance

Title

MPEG-4 Part 25 Software implementation

Authors

Open discussion

Summary

Integration of IC elementary stream was done in inconsistent manner: while the bitstream is correctly encapsulated it is signalized as a BBA ES in the meta atom.

Resolution

Update the code to ensure consistency between the meta atom and the ES in the case of IC elementary streams.

7Liaison

Title

Establishment of a permanent liaison with MSIF

Authors

Summary

MCSF members are contributors to MPEG and Open Mobile Alliances (OMA). MCSF is interested in aligning their contributions to the two standard bodies and ensure smooth integration between technical recommendations and standards issued by the two bodies in the field of interest mentioned above. Establishing a formal liaison between WG11 and MCSF would facilitate to follow the technical developments and take actions when necessary.

Resolution

Accepted. Nominating Seung Wook Lee as representative for WG11.
