  1. MPEG-4

    1. Part 22 Open Font Format

The Requirements subgroup approved N14085 Call for Proposals for ISO/IEC 14496-22 “Open Font Format” Color Font Technology and MATH layout support to extend font technology to cope with solid, gradient and opaque fonts and related functionalities. Compared to the last meeting, the request for math layout support was added. Responses are expected for the 107th meeting.
  1. MPEG-H

MPEG-H will be the new umbrella for the High Efficiency Video Coding and the related Systems and Audio standards. The vision for MPEG-H was defined at the 99th meeting in N12312 Context and Objectives of MPEG-H.
MPEG foresees the initial standards of MPEG-H to include video coding (HEVC), advanced 3D audio coding and MPEG Media Transport. The Definition of graphics and user interfaces will come later.
    1. MPEG-H Part 2: HEVC

Still Picture Coding

HEVC-Intra coding might be used as the Advanced Image Coder that JPEG requires. The capabilities of HEVC-Intra coding were discussed. Evaluation of the HEVC performance will be done jointly with JPEG. Access to the Hannover and Brussels ftp-sites will be exchanged in order to use MPEG and JPEG test material. 16 bit test material is missing at this point. N14086 Test conditions for HEVC still picture coding performance evaluation describes the envisioned evaluation that should take place prior to the 107th meeting. The adhoc group N14083 AHG on still image coding using HEVC will also continue to work on this topic. N14087 Liaison to WG1 on HEVC Still Picture Collaboration keeps WG 1 informed.

In a related systems activity, a file format for images will be defined with the help of JPEG experts to enable applications like slide shows, low latency decoding, meta data, predictive decoding. This activity will just define the file format and it will not result in a change to the HEVC specification. FDAM should be reached in 7/2014.
Profiles

Several profiles related to 4:4:4 were discussed. In light of the upcoming work on screen content coding, several members were concerned about the inclusion of tools related to screen content coding at this meeting into the current specification. Unfortunately, it became clear only late in the meeting that it will be difficult to reach consensus on whether a 4:4:4 profile for 8 bit signals should be defined at all in the current range extension. Therefore, MPEG issued a resolution requesting National Bodies to voice their opinion on this topic. It appears that the consensus of the 105th meeting is opposed now by some delegates. The current version of range extensions under ballot includes a 4:4:4 8bit profile. It is suggested to start discussions early at the 107th meeting. MPEG sent N14016 WG11 Liaison VCEG to inform VCEG about the state of the discussion. The Requirements subgroup thanks the British National Body for its input in N14103 Response to UKNB Comment on HEVC Range Extension Timescales.

    1. MPEG-H Part 3: 3D Audio

Due to the need for program level loudness control which is codec agnostic, MPEG issued N13858 Call for Proposals on Dynamic Range Control Technology at the 105th meeting. Sufficient responses were received in order to define an appropriate solution. Work will be done in the Audio subgroup.
