    • Summary

      • This contribution proposes a multiple directional intra prediction scheme to extend the DC mode in ITM6 to five modes. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves about 1.4%, 4.1% bit rate saving in CS2, and CS1 configurations respectively.

      • The proposed method added 4 additional modes: Vertical mode, Horizontal mode, Down_Left mode, Down_Right mode.

      • Due diligence has been reported by providing the related IPR information.

      • Q: Does the proposed method use the smoothing method?

        • A: Yes.




    • Conclusion

      • Adopt this technology to the next version of ITM.

    • Summary

      • This is the cross-check report of m21356 on extended intra prediction coding tool.

      • The software provided by the proponent was reviewed and is consistent with the descriptions in m21356.

      • The coding efficiency of cross-check is identical to the ones reported by proponent.

14.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.70m31504 Post filtering for internet video coding [Ronggang Wang, Xufeng Li, Siwei Ma, Tiejun Huang, Wen Gao]

    • Summary

      • This contribution proposes to add a post filtering tool outside the decoding loop, as a non-normative tool of Internet Video Coding.

      • Experimental results show that both the subjective and objective performance can be improved by the proposed scheme. It achieves about 4.5% and 1.9% bit rate saving in CS2, CS1 configure respectively.

    • Comments

      • Q: Is the proposed method post-filter or in-loop filter?

        • A: Post-filter.

      • Q: Do you add some syntaxes?

        • A: No.

      • Q: How long is the delay of the use of the method?

        • A: The coding delay is similar with the in-loop filtering in AVC/H.264

      • Q: Although the tool is non-normative tool, do we clarify IPR information?

        • We don’t need IPR information because it is non-information tool.

    • Conclusion

      • Adopt it as a non-normative tool for the next version ITM.

The following improvement of ITM is reported.

  • Note1: The CS1 comparison may not be meaningful regarding AVC CBP, which does not use B pictures (while all IVC codecs use B pictures), but the numbers indicate improvements in the development of ITM.

  • Note2: ITM5 was technically identical to ITM4

  • Note3: Positive numbers indicate lower bitrate of ITM

The plan for visual testing was discussed with the test chair. The visual testing was performed on Wednesday.

With regard to the technologies adopted during this meeting, an output document which contains a documentation about prior-art status was planned (N13946).



2013-10-30 BOG meeting

Topic 1: Review on prior art about adopted technologies

  • There was an opinion that information on prior art can be classified as two categories:

    • Information that describes a patent or paper over 20 years since the technology was invented; Information that describes the patent holder of the proposed method guarantees free of charge licensing.

    • Information that describes the related technology is not expected to exist

  • An expert expressed that the investigation of the prior art about the adopted intra prediction is not sufficient.

  • The expert will provide the relevant information of smoothing filtering on intra prediction by contacting the possible patent holder.

Topic 2: Viewing test

  • Informal viewing test has been performed on Wednesday from 15:00 to 17:00.

  • Test chair expressed that there was a procedure problem of the viewing test.

  • Test chair recommended performing the test once again on Thursday morning.

  • The expert who was charge of viewing test said that he would perform viewing test once again on Thursday from 9:00 to 10:00.

Topic 3: Preparing output documents

  • IVC group expects that there will be three output documents depending on viewing test:

    • Description of Internet Video Coding Test Model (ITM) Version 7.0
      or Working Draft of IVC

    • Description of Exploration Experiments for Internet Video Coding
      or Description of Core Experiments for Internet Video Coding

    • Collection of information related to adopted IVC technologies

2013-10-31 BOG meeting

Topic 1: Reviewing on prior art about adopted technologies

  • During the Sunday meeting, The IVC AHG had recommended adopting the following technologies:

    • Intra prediction: m31516, m31256

    • Multiple reference frame: m31557

    • Post filter (for non-normative tool): m31504

  • Later, the BOG became aware that a patent related to the adopted technology of boundary smoothing filtering in intra prediction existed, which was filed less than 15 years ago.

  • Therefore, the BOG recommended adopting the technologies as proposed in m31557 and m31504 for the next version of ITM.

  • Concerning the intra prediction methods proposed in m31516 and m31256, the BOG recommended adopting them without smoothing filtering for the next version of ITM.

Topic 2: Viewing test

  • An informal experts viewing has been performed on Wednesday from 15:00 to 17:00.

  • The test chair indicated that there was a procedure problem in the viewing test setup.

  • Therefore, the viewing test was performed once again on Thursday from 9:00 to 10:00.

  • Results are shown below.

Topic 3: Preparing viewing test for the next meeting

  • With regard to viewing comparison of IVC, VCB and WVC, the following question has been raised: Can the IVC configuration use the adopted non-normative tool for viewing test? (i.e., post-filter)?

  • This requires further discussion when the final test conditions are defined for all three codecs.

Topic 4: Preparing output documents

The IVC BOG prepared the following three output documents:



  • Description of Internet Video Coding Test Model (ITM) Version 7.0
    or Working Draft of IVC (N13944)

  • Description of Exploration Experiments for Internet Video Coding (N13945) including

    • EE1: Transform and quantization

    • EE2: Entropy coding

    • EE3: B-frame coding

    • EE4: Intra prediction

    • EE5: In/out loop processing

    • EE6: Fixed QP

  • Collection of information related to adopted IVC technologies (N13946)
