5.17.2.5.1.1.1.1.1JCTVC-H0109 Non-CE6: Modification/simplification of intra angular prediction [S. Matsuo, M. Takagi, S. Takamura, A. Shimizu, H. Jozawa (NTT)]
This document introduces an intra angular prediction method exploiting interpolation technique whose tap length is other than two. In the proposed method, reference samples for intra angular prediction are generated by the conventional 2-tap filter or 4-tap DCT-IF. The overall average coding gains against the HM5.0 anchor were about 0.3%, 0.8%, 0.8% (Y, Cb, Cr in HE), 0.4%, 0.2% and 0.3% (Y, Cb, Cr in LC). The maximum coding gains were about 1.8%, 2.5% and 3.4% (Y, Cb and Cr) for the sequence "BasketballDrill" in LC case. The average run-times of encoding and decoding were 99.8% and 99.5%, respectively.
The number of additional filters is large (32). This would not be in alignment with a unified design. Concern was expressed about the complexity increase. No action was taken on this.

The cross-checker supported the proposal.
