3DG Tools and WebGL

Mark Callow

Examples of WebGL

JavaScript wrapper on OpenGL. Works for all browsers except IE.

The 3D objects are not compressed. There may be an opportunity to use 3DG tools to code them.

Two possibilities:

- 1) write a java script decoder of 3DG tools

- 2) make a 3DG element (same as image and video elements)

- 3) make a Java Decoder and wrap it on JavaScript

Propose our decoders to Web HyperText Application Working Group. The output should be as flat as possible: VB, IB, ...

Possible way: start a work on implementing the JS decoder.

Tools to convert C/C++ to JS: https://github.com/kripken/emscripten (open source), Mandriel (commercial)

WebCL

Mikael Bourge Sevenier

Khronos presentation.

One idea of WebCL: process more in GPU that CPU because it consumes less battery.

The place of Khronos "products": near the hardware

WebCL: enable high performance parallel processing on GPU/multicore applications; integration of OpenCL capabilities in a JS environment.

Started in May last year.

Idea: have the 3DG decoders in WebCL and provide the output to the WebGL component (this may be fourth method for integrating 3DG decoders in the browsers).

m23837

Metadata for AR broadcasting system

B. S. Choi(ETRI), Junghak Kim, Young Ho Jeong, Jin Woo Hong

The current AR broadcasted content is fixed. There is no way that the TV viewer support interactivity with the user.

Authentic AR for broadcasted content:

  • TV viewer can influence the TV program by selecting, changing and customizing the AR contents. (From one way AR to interactive AR service)

HybridTV:

  • Online content coming from different sensors and mixed in real time at the set top box level.

  • It may be independent or dependent of the broadcasted content.

Proposal of a similar architecture for AR as for HybridTV

Authoring Server: indicates places to augment, at what time, some information about the content (e.g. sad mood involves a sad character)

Metadata for augmentation is segmented by time fragments containing instructions about the regions to augment. The augmentation region can move in time.

AR-Content Provider Server: it should be possible that several sources exist for providing AR content. It should be possible that the user choose the AR content to use.

It is needed to have a representation format for the content used to augment the broadcast content.

InstructionType is a container of elements describing the region to be augmented, the object to augment on, the environment parameters and the marker image. The marker image can be used as an user control or to compute the position and orientation of the augmented region.

The following use cases and technologies are covering V1:
Use cases:

  • Broadcasted AR

  • Mobile MR/AR Games

  • Virtual Glasses

  • Travel guides

  • Architecture

  • m-Commerce

  • education

The use case must bring some elements of the benefit/essential value of the technologies (MPEG) in implementing them. Use cases that reflect the added value of MPEG are more interested (TV, compression, scalability/ hierarchical representation, dynamic and synchronized composition, streaming graphics).
What are the technologies appearing in the standard?
What are technologies that need to be developed or are already being developed?

- Maps and markers

- Approximate Geometry for occlusion/realistic illumination

- Tracking of the augmentation region (representation of a reference image)

- Access to the local camera in the BIFS scene and in general access to the sensors

- 3D camera

Seon-Min Rhee, Yong Beom Lee, Minsu Ahn, James D.K. Kim

Associate to the realistic video the simplified version of the geometry. Planar structure can be calculated in real time. The proposal is to have a PlaneType that contains the equation of the plane and its ID.

The mechanism is used for occlusions between real and virtual objects.

Acceleration sensors: add an axis field to make the distinction when the acceleration is on several directions.

Accepted
Light sensor type: add the colorimeter spaces (XYZ, Lab, Lch, ...) because the usual calorimeters are not sensing in the RGB space.

Resolution: Introduce the colorSpaceModelType that extends the set of colour spaces. Add the attributes: colorSpace, colorValue.

1. TactileType error: the binary representation is not containing tactileDisplay. Resolution: Make the correction

Work in progress

2. The reference to the annexes is not clearly pointed in the text. Editorial: make the correction

3. Add in the introduction on MultiInteractionPointSensorType that contains a usage scenario and make clear that the semantic of the action is beyond the scope of the sensor but part of the adaptation engine.

4. Clarify the semantic of noOfChannels and noOfSamples for the BendSensor. This can be done by having an introduction explaining how the sensor works. Also add examples for the BendSensor. Will be done during the editing period.

5. BodyTemperatureType to delete the value and the unit.

The AP list with the persons in charge is sent over the mailing list.

m23876

Editor’s input of SoCD ISO/IEC 23005-3 2nd edition

Sang-Kyun Kim, Bum Suk Choi

Change the type of adaptRange in the binary representation. Accepted

Change the EffectType binary representation. Accepted.

Resolution: in the binary representation, add the length of bitstream for each sensory effect, just after the ID of the sensory effect.

Other editorial comments accepted.

AP: EffectBaseType: the scope of SupplementalInformation and autoExtraction is not clear. Check this during the week.

AP: Binary for TactilePattern should be double checked. To be done during the week.

m23877

Reference software framework for ISO/IEC 23005-3 2nd edition including binary implementations

Sang-Kyun Kim, Yong Soo Joo, Jin-Seo Kim, Ki-Hong Kim, Gil-Haeng Lee

Almost 50% the binary implementation for the different types are ready. A list for the rest of the types is sent to the list. MPEG-V software will be committed on the SVN.

AP make an output document on MPEG-V reference software status

m23878

Binary representation and software for color correction effect type in ISO/IEC 23005-3

Sang-Kyun Kim, Yong Soo Joo, Jin Seo Kim, In-Su Jang, Soon-Yong Kwon

Binarisation for some types that are taken from MPEG-7 is different in PEG-V than in MPEG-7. This may not necessarily bring incompatibility problems.

In the case when MPEG-7 types are used but only in a simplified version, it is better to define new types.

AP: review the new types Will be done during the editing period.

M22908

Summary of Voting on ISO/IEC DIS 23007-2

ITTF via SC 29 Secretariat

Accepted after discussion.

The reference software for Part 2 will be provided next meeting. The reference software for Part 1 AMD 1 (Widgets) will stay in WD this meeting.

Resolution: we recommend to not promote MPEG-U Part 2 as FDIS because of the lack of the Reference Software.

Only keep the spherical coordinates for encoding the orientation of the transformed pattern.

The transformation includes now a flip mode.

Open issue: representation of the orientation looks to be the euler angles.

- Encoding of translation vectors by using octree

- No prediction for orientation since there is no evidence that it brings anything wrt the compression performance.

- The "instance" will be aligned to the "pattern" in order to have the same vertex order, triangle order.

- encoding of additional properties is not yet done.

- todo: use a mask for the transform

- todo: encode the textureCoordinates and make clear that the geometry/connectivity used is the one encoded for the pattern.

- todo: benchmark

- todo: put the non-pattern part of the object at the beginning of the bitstream

- todo: continue the experimentation on the residual errors

2General issues

2.1General discussion

2.1.1Reference Software

It is recalled that the source code of both decoder AND encoder should be provided as part of the Reference Software for all technologies to be adopted in MPEG standards. Moreover, not providing the complete software for a published technology shall conduct to the removal of the corresponding technical specification from the standard.

Currently all the AFX tools published in the third edition are supported by both encoder and decoder implementation.
