3D-AVC-CE4 related: The proposal for intra skip prediction modification
|
Summary report:
-
Zhejiang University proposed gradient values along 5 of 9 directions that were calculated based on neighbouring values.
-
Samsung proposed a combined plane segmentation based on intra prediction and depth intra skip prediction.
-
NTT proposed palette-based prediction with binary shape coding.
-
The CE report recommended adopting the Samsung proposal based on it having the highest gains being reported. It also recommended to continue the CE to improve the results further.
m23660 (Samsung) combines two intra prediction tools: plane segmentation based intra prediction and depth intra skip prediction, which estimates prediction direction from neighbouring pixels and uses the high priority MB type (intra skip or B-direct). This reportedly achieves gains of 0.83% for 2-view and 0.95% for 3-view. They also reported the performance of individual tools.
m23630 (Zhejiang) was aiming to improve MPM derivation based on gradient data. Gains of approximately 0.19% and 0.14% were reported with a negligible increase in complexity.
m23942 (Kyunghee Univ.) proposed extension of the Samsung scheme, to include intra skip for P-slices. The additional gain was approximately 0.25% for both the 2-view and 3-view cases. A cross-check remained in progress.
It was noted that there should also be some value in maintaining current AVC intra prediction and that small changes to existing modules should be justified by sufficient coding gain.
Conclusion:
