In this contribution, DC mode was proposed as a default intra mode. For this purpose, complexity and hit numbers between DC and planar mode were analysed. In HM5.0, the default intra mode is assumed as planar mode in the intra mode coding process. Previously, in HM4.0, DC mode was the default intra mode. According to tests, the ratio between the number of operations for (DC prediction + DC prediction filtering) and that of planar prediction is approximately 13.3. The hit rate of planar mode becomes higher when the default intra mode is set as planar mode rather than DC mode. In a similar fashion, the hit number of the DC mode becomes higher when the default intra mode is set as the DC mode rather than the planar mode. Combined with both results, it could be concluded that the complexity of a default DC mode case is lower (on average) than that of default planar mode case since DC mode has a higher number of hits with lower complexity than the planar mode would have. Average coding efficiency changes from this modification for each configuration were reportedly 0.0% (AI-HE), 0.0% (AI-LC), 0.0% (RA-HE), 0.0% (RA-LC), 0.0% (LD-HE), 0.0% (LD-LC) and 0.1% (RA-HE-10bit). Coding efficiency impact for Class F was -0.1%. Encoding and decoding times were reported as 100% and 99%, respectively. It was noted that a default DC mode is more efficient than a default planar mode, especially for class F since DC prediction is better than planar prediction to represent uniform regions for computer-generated video, such as screen content. Based on these results, it was proposed to use DC mode as the default intra mode in HM6.0.

Decision: Adopted.
