2MPEG-4 AVC

The video subgroup held one discussion session on 8 Feb. jointly with VCEG (ITU-T Q6/SG16) experts, to discuss the further development of the AVC standard. This was arranged in order to avoid divergence of the twin texts, where the current status is as follows:

  • MPEG has issued a WD in Geneva, which includes new SEI messages on frame packing 2D signalling, frame packing tiling format and MVC view position.

  • VCEG has added 3 additional profiles (constrained high, scalable constrained high, scalable constrained baseline) to a draft which reached ITU consent by November 2011; these had been presented to MPEG in Geneva (M22618) and were assessed as being useful in a session that was held jointly with VCEG experts, but had not been included in MPEG’s WD as the contributors were not available when the WD doc was drafted.

  • A proposed display orientation SEI message had been presented to MPEG in Geneva (M21659) and also to VCEG as well, and was noted to now have been modified to include more degrees of freedom, e.g. regarding rotation; a modified version which includes this (M23499) was presented in San Jose (and was also brought to VCEG).

As the action taken on these topics, the video subgroup approved a PDAM text which includes the SEI messages from the previous WD, the display orientation SEI message and the 3 profiles, the latter with identical text as had been approved by VCEG in their Geneva meeting 11/11. MPEG conveyed this PDAM to VCEG with a liaison letter, emphasizing the importance of alignment of the twin texts, and requesting to consider appropriate actions of their text, which appears possible at their meeting in April/May 2012. The planned timeline on the MPEG side is: PDAM 12/02 (2 months ballot), DAM 12/05, FDAM 13/01.
In the joint meeting with VCEG, information was also given about the current status of 3D video coding investigations (tracks A and B in the terminology used in MPEG), as far as MVC/AVC related technologies are concerned. This included a presentation of the current WD on MVC extension by depth maps. One concern raised was due to the fact that NAL unit header types are a finite resource (due to 6 bit signalling) and thus care should be taken to not consume them for potentially various types of depth maps. VCEG gave the information that a similar proposal as track B (AVC compatible) had been received on their side, but had not yet been reviewed at the time of the joint discussion.
From the results of this discussion, the video subgroup recommended to send the PDAM text and the two 3DV related WDs to VCEG as liaison statement attachments for information and further study.
