High Level Syntax for 3DV-HEVC

m22915 (Nokia) was proposed as a starting point for AVC-compatible specification, based on the WD for MVC-compatible solution. This included high-level syntax, semantics, and decoding process, as well as depth-range-based weighted prediction (DRWP) for depth coding. It was proposed to use the same SPS for texture and depth. Syntax for camera parameters was also included that enables updates and prediction of parameters. It was suggested that a simpler syntax may be useful to specify. More detailed study of the text is generally needed.
m23734 (Zhejiang) considered the necessity to transmit camera parameters to support VSP and other algorithms. It proposed a "camera parameters set" (CPS) to avoid unnecessary or frequent signalling of camera parameters, where each CPS would apply to a specified number of frames and views. Gains were claimed in regard to the bytes required to transmit the camera parameters. It was noted that the same functionality is provided in m22915 (Nokia).
m23626 (Sony) proposed signalling of depth range parameters for depth weighted prediction using a parameter set syntax. An identifier is placed in the slice header to indicate the parameter set that is used. Also, a depth weighted prediction flag is added in the slice header. It was also proposed that a camera parameter SEI message be defined with same syntax as the parameter set.
m23805 (Qualcomm) included proposals of 1) level definitions for different operation points; 2) VUI and HRD parameters; 3) SPS and PPS activation; 4) SEI messages; and 5) inclusion of the slice header design in 3DV-ATM. Detailed text for all the proposals had been provided.
m23806 (Qualcomm) proposed a high level syntax design based on the design of the latest HEVC WD. The proposal for HEVC based 3DV included the following: 1) a sequence parameter set to support signalling of view dependency; 2) a NAL unit header design to support adaptation for texture and/or depth for specific views; and 3) reference picture list construction based on the latest reference picture set (RPS) design in HEVC.
A BOG discussion was held on High Level Syntax (Chaired by Chen Ying), which recommended a detailed list of adoptions in its BOG report (m23985). The BoG conclusions were agreed.
It was recommended to establish an AHG until next meeting, including a mandate to harmonize and align with HEVC activity.
